Cloud9 vs Eternal Fire Predictions

Cloud9 and Eternal Fire will meet on Wednesday, September 20, in the first round of Group D matches at ESL Pro League Season 18. It'll mark their second meeting of the week after Cloud9 defeated Eternal Fire (2-1) at RES Eastern European Masters: Fall 2023.

Esports betting sites have Cloud9 priced as 1.28 favourites to defeat Eternal Fire, who are priced as 3.50 underdogs for Wednesday's rematch. At the offered betting odds, C9 are given a 78.1% implied probability of winning the series, which doesn't sound wrong, considering they already beat Eternal Fire this weekend.

  • Cloud9 are slowly finding traction
  • Eternal Fire have not looked great when faced with stronger teams
  • It'll be an uphill battle for the Turkish squad

Head to Head

Eternal Fire and Cloud9 last met on Sunday, September 17, during RES Eastern European Masters: Fall 2023, when Cloud9 won 2-1.

  • Cloud9 2-1 Eternal Fire – September 17, 2023

Cloud9 Form

Cloud9 won their first tournament with the new roster on Sunday, when they defeated Team Spirit in the finals of RES Eastern European Masters: Fall 2023. It was a B-Tier tournament, so it doesn't count for much; however, it shows that Cloud9 are in good form.

Before their run to the title, Cloud9 have not placed higher than top six across the two events they've attended since the summer break. That includes a fifth-sixth place finish at Intel Extreme Masters Cologne 2023 and a fifth-eight place finish at Gamers8 2023.

Results-wise, Cloud9 haven't accomplished much, but they have been playing well and only really struggle against stronger teams in ENCE and Team Vitality. They lost against Bad News Eagles (6-16) in the second round of RES Eastern European Masters: Fall 2023, which is the only iffy result C9 have produced since the roster revamp.

This is a good team, with very talented players, that is bound to find momentum at one point and emerge as one of the top teams in the world. However, it seems like C9 need a bit more time to find the needed synergy to show what they're capable of.

Cloud9 Squad & Team News

Cloud9 have not announced any changes.

  • Abai "HObbit" Hasenov

Eternal Fire Form

Eternal Fire have not looked great since the end of the summer break, but they have made two semifinals at CCT North Europe Series #6 and RES Eastern European Masters: Fall 2023, where they lost against Cloud9 (1-2).

Before that, Eternal Fire exited Dunav Party LAN in seventh-eighth, Pinnacle Cup V in fifth-eight place, and CCT Central Europe Series #7 in fifth-eighth place. These are not the most inspiring results, but about what you would expect from the Turkish squad.

Eternal Fire have had their moments this season, yet they rarely delivered in bigger events, and they typically struggle when faced with stronger teams. This makes backing them to defeat Cloud9 less appealing of an option, granted Cloud9 have shown that they can slip against weaker teams, so perhaps there's a chance for EF to do some damage.

Eternal Fire Squad & Team News

No changes for Eternal Fire.

  • Buğra "Calyx" Arkın

  • Ali "Wicadia" Haydar Yalçın

Verdict

Cloud9 defeated Eternal Fire (2-1) on Sunday, and they're expected to win again on Wednesday. That's a fair assessment, as it's hard to find a good argument in favour of Eternal Fire, who can realistically only win if Cloud9 blunders.

That said, Eternal Fire won a map against Cloud9 on Sunday (8-16, 16-8, 13-16), and the series as a whole was relatively close. Eternal Fire didn't show enough for me to believe that they can defeat Cloud9, but it's not too crazy to believe that the Turks can steal one map again.
