Both Counter-Strike 2 teams started the tournament with a loss, as Liquid fell against Eternal Fire while Imperial got swept by G2 Esports. Neither game was particularly close, although Imperial did look a bit more potent in their loss.

Round one results should not be indicative of how this game will end, however, seeing Liquid lose in the way they did does raise some concerns. Liquid have not been playing well this season, and their lacklustre showings of late make it easy to believe that Imperial can do some damage.

Imperial Esports's season debut in an S-Tier tournament ended in a 0-2 loss to G2 Esports. It was an expected result, but Imperial deserve praise for what they showed on the day.

The Brazilians lost the series with 8-13 on Mirage and 11-13 on Inferno, which is not a terrible result considering the level of opponent they had to face. Try, in particular, had an excellent day, ending the series with the servers' second-highest average performance rating of 1.20.

It is also fair to argue that G2 Esports would not have won had Nemanja "huNter-"Kovač not carried them to victory, with a 1.89 rating. While this is more indicative of G2's shaky form, Imperial did not look all that bad.

Team Liquid Form

Team Liquid have been quite disappointing this season. While they have had their moments, namely during ESL Pro League Season 21, where they showed some signs of life, Liquid have never truly found any momentum.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt that their performances in ESL Pro League were an indication of good things to come, but that seems to not have been the case, as Liquid dropped their BLAST Open Spring 2025 opener against Eternal Fire with 7-13 on Dust II and Anubis.

Admittedly, Eternal Fire are not a terrible team, so that loss is not the end of the world. But it is very hard to stay optimistic about Liquid and what they can accomplish after a streak of up-and-down performances.

Verdict

Imperial Esports v Team Liquid

This is Team Liquid's game to lose, so it makes sense that they are priced as favourites. But at 1.25, you can not really make a good case for them, despite facing an inferior team.

Imperial looked better than expected in their game against G2 Esports, who arguably are stronger than Liquid. This does not mean Imperial should be billed as the favourites for this match, but if they can show the same thing they did against G2, Imperial should be good for one map.
