Sixteen of the world’s best Counter-Strike 2 teams will head to Astana, Kazakhstan, to battle it out for the lion’s share of the $1,250,000 prize pool on May 10-18.

PGL Astana 2025 is the ninth S-Tier Counter-Strike 2 tournament of the season and one of the most lucrative events of the year.

Set to take place in the capital of Kazakhstan, PGL Astana 2025 will be one of the final tests before the BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025 and a tournament which will give us the answer of who is the best team when Team Vitality are out of the picture.

PGL Astana 2025 will welcome 16 Counter-Strike 2 teams, who will start their campaign in a single Swiss-style group.

Set to begin on May 10, the group stage will play out over 33 best-of-three (BO3) series. Following the Swiss-style format, the first eight teams that win three games will proceed to the playoffs, while the first three squads that lose three games will be eliminated from the event.

The playoffs are single-elimination with all games played as best-of-three (BO3), except for the grand finals, which will be best-of-five (BO5).

PGL Astana 2025 will be one of the final stops before the BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025 for many of the teams in attendance, including Team Spirit, who are the tournament favourites, priced at 2.10 on the top betting sites.

The Russian outfit started the season with a title from BLAST Bounty Spring 2025, but have failed to add another trophy to their cabinet, mainly due to their inability to make it past Team Vitality.

The latter have eliminated Team Spirit from three events, including Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2025 (2nd), BLAST Open Spring 2025 (3rd-4th), and BLAST Rivals Spring (3rd-4th). Now, with Vitality out of the picture, as the Bees decided to skip PGL Astana 2025, Spirit’s road to the top looks far simpler.

Simpler, however, comes with an asterisk, as Spirit will face stiff resistance from the likes of The MongolZ (4.00), Natus Vincere (6.00), and Aurora Gaming (6.00).

The MongolZ, in particular, are an interesting team to follow. While they’ve yet to win a tournament this season, the Mongolians have made the semfinals in three S-Tier tournaments and got eliminated from all three by no other than Vitality.

With no Vitality to stand in their way, The MongolZ look set for another deep run, but the question remains – can they make it past Team Spirit?

There are also a few questions about Aurora Gaming and Natus Vincere. Both teams have proven they have a very high ceiling, yet neither have managed to consistently produce deep runs in bigger events.

Their luck could change with a slightly lighter field in Astana, although more than that, Aurora Gaming and Natus Vincere have to use the time off wisely and iron out some of their issues to pose a serious threat for the title.

Virtus.pro (21.00), who are one of the outsiders to win the event, could use PGL Astana 2025 as a chance for a fresh start, following the arrival of F_1N as a new coach. While nothing is guaranteed, F_1N has enough experience to steer the struggling VP in the right direction.
