Excel Esports vs MAD Lions Predictions

Excel Esports and MAD Lions will meet on Saturday, July 15, in the first round of LoL EMEA Championship (LEC) 2023 Summer Groups. It'll mark their first meeting since late June when Excel defeated MAD Lions in a best-of-one series.

Esports betting sites have MAD Lions priced as 1.44 favourites to defeat Excel Esports, who enter the match as 2.62 underdogs. The offered betting odds make sense if we take into account that MAD Lions have far more experience in best-of-three (Bo3) games, but their performance throughout the regular season wasn't good enough to justify the offered price.

  • Excel Esports looked better throughout the regular season
  • MAD Lions are overrated
  • Excel Esports have a realistic chance to win

Head to Head

Excel Esports and MAD Lions last met during LEC 2023 Summer regular season, when Excel Esports won.

  • Excel Esports 1-0 MAD Lions – June 26, 2023

Excel Esports Form

Excel Esports ended the LEC 2023 Summer regular season in third place, with a 5-4 record, which sat them in a very crowded group of teams, tied with Team Heretics and just one win above Team BDS, SK Gaming, KOI, and MAD Lions.

Even though Excel's performance throughout the regular season wasn't spectacular, they've exceeded expectations and looked decent. Moreover, Excel Esports' performance metrics this split are better than MAD Lions, yet they're priced as underdogs for this match.

This doesn't surprise me since MAD Lions are one of the most overrated teams despite not showing anything remarkable. Excel are, in the worst-case scenario, as good as MAD Lions.

Excel Esports Squad & Team News

Excel Esports have not made any changes.

  • Andrei "Odoamne" Pascu – top lane
  • Lee "Peach" Min-gyu – jungle
  • Felix "Abbedagge" Braun – mid lane
  • Patrik "Patrik" Jírů – ADC
  • Dino "LIMIT" Tot – support

MAD Lions Form

MAD Lions ended the LEC 2023 Summer regular season in seventh place, tied with KOI, SK Gaming, and Team BDS, with just four wins to their name. Over the nine games played, MAD Lions haven't produced anything noteworthy and haven't looked very good in their wins either.

As noted, MAD Lions' performance stats this split aren't as good as Excel Esports'. They have below-average early-game metrics and some of the worst gold-related stats in the league. Most importantly, MAD Lions – like Excel – fail to accomplish much in the early game, and their mid-late game is worse than Excel's.

So why are MAD Lions even priced as the favourites? It has to do with the fact that MAD Lions are a bit overrated due to their success in LEC 2023 Spring, but watching them play reveals that this is a mediocre team at best. On a more positive note, MAD Lions have played more best-of-three series this season, which will help, but expecting them to do well just because of that isn't a smart move.

MAD Lions Squad & Team News

No changes for MAD Lions.

  • Kim "Chasy" Dong-hyeon – top lane
  • Javier "Elyoya" Prades Batalla – jungle
  • Yasin "Nisqy" Dinçer – mid lane
  • Matyáš "Carzzy" Orság – ADC
  • Zdravets "Hylissang" Iliev Galabov – support

Verdict

Esports betting odds suggest that MAD Lions should defeat Excel Esports, but I can't agree with that. This is a 50/50 match at best, and even that is perhaps a bit unfair to Excel Esports, who've looked better this split.

It is a bit scary betting against MAD Lions in the best-of series, but the stats suggest that Excel Esports are the better team. I'm taking Excel to win outright and adding a smaller position on Excel to sweep.
