Esports betting sites have Fnatic priced as 1.30 favourites to defeat Excel Esports, who enter the match as 3.40 underdogs. The offered betting odds are a bit surprising considering how good Excel Esports have looked in their first match of the playoffs against G2 Esports, but if we compare the teams’ results from this season, then Fnatic are undeniably the better team.

  • Excel Esports looked excellent against G2 Esports.
  • Fnatic have been playing well this split.
  • Both teams have a clear win condition.

Head to Head

Fnatic and Excel Esports last met in the first week of the LEC 2023 Summer regular season, when Fnatic won.

  • Fnatic 1-0 Excel Esports – June 18, 2023

Fnatic Form

Fnatic have been in excellent form this split, and it’s quite impressive how far this team has come after finishing the last two splits in ninth (LEC Winter) and eighth (LEC Spring) place. But credit is where credit is due; Fnatic deserve all the success that has come to them.

If we look at Fnatic’s performance metrics, they rank second or third across all important stats and are particularly good in the early game, with the league’s highest Gold Difference at 10 minutes (+897.1). It’s very tough to find any major flaws with the team besides the obvious – Fnatic will have their off games and they’ve had their fair share of games which Fnatic have thrown.

But even in some of the matches where Fnatic give away too much, they found a way to bounce back, which proves that Fnatic are a quality team and arguably the second-best European LoL squad.

Fnatic Squad & Team News

Fnatic won’t make any roster changes.

  • Óscar "Oscarinin" Muñoz Jiménez – top lane
  • Iván "Razork" Martín Díaz – jungle
  • Marek "Humanoid" Brázda – mid lane
  • Oh "Noah" Hyeon-taek – ADC
  • Adrian "Trymbi" Trybus – support

Excel Esports Form

Excel Esports, like Fnatic, rose from the ashes and are now just one game away from securing a spot in the LEC 2023 Summer Playoffs. An impressive improvement from the team, which finished the last two splits in 10th place, but a well-deserved one.

Excel Esports have proven to be competitive this split, and they truly stood out with their close game against G2 Esports (2-3) in the first round of the playoffs. However, while Excel have had their moments, they also have one obvious flaw.

Unlike Fnatic, Excel Esports have a terrible early game, and they consistently fall behind before the 15-minute mark. With a -390.2 Gold Difference at 10 minutes, Excel ranks ninth in the league, as well as 10th with a -751.4 Gold Difference at 15 minutes. This, however, comes as a part of their play style.

Excel Esports prefer to play scaling, so they will consistently struggle in the early game and try to survive until their composition comes alive in the mid-late game. The idea is for Excel to bend but not break and play a more defensive style, which does sound like a good idea – the problem is that Excel have been doing it for so long that the other teams had to figure them out.

Moreover, it’s very easy to counter this playstyle – Fnatic have to get an early advantage (which they likely will) and use the lead to snowball to victory, not giving Excel enough time to come online. Sounds simple enough.

Excel Esports Squad & Team News

No changes for Excel Esports.

  • Andrei "Odoamne" Pascu – top lane
  • Lee "Peach" Min-gyu – jungle
  • Felix "Abbedagge" Braun – mid lane
  • Patrik "Patrik" Jírů – ADC
  • Dino "LIMIT" Tot – support

Verdict

Stylistically, Fnatic should do well against Excel Esports as long as they play their game, i.e. get an early lead and snowball to victory. For Excel to succeed, they must hope that Fnatic don’t execute their plan well, which essentially puts Fnatic on the clock, assuming the two teams won’t step away from their preferred playstyle.

Anything can happen in this game, and we’ve seen Fnatic produce some stinkers lately, but objectively, Fnatic are the better team, and as long as they don’t shoot themselves in the foot, Fnatic should come out ahead.
