Two rivals, Fnatic and G2 Esports, will lock horns on Saturday, May 24, in the opening round of the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) 2025 Spring Playoffs, promising an exciting clash no esports fan should miss.

The two squads have a long history of being in each other's throats for the LEC title, and more times than not, the playoff clashes ended in G2's favour.

For this match, G2 Esports are billed as underdogs, which, considering their performances, this split have not been that great, relative to Fnatic.

Performance-wise, Fnatic are rightly billed as favourites, but the question remains – can Fnatic overcome their demons and defeat G2 Esports in the playoffs?

  • G2 Esports have a good record against Fnatic in the playoffs
  • Fnatic have looked better this split
  • G2 Esports are rightly priced as underdogs

Head to Head

G2 Esports and Fnatic have met twice this split, each winning one series.

  • G2 Esports 2-0 Fnatic – February 17, 2025
  • Fnatic 2-1 G2 Esports – April 27, 2025

Fnatic Form

Fnatic finished the LEC 2025 Spring regular season in second place, with a 7-2 record and a +9 map differential. While they placed behind Karmine Corp, Fnatic have been, statistically, the best-performing team of the split.

They are particularly great in the early game, with a significant lead at 20 minutes in over 1/3 of their games. Moreover, they boast the league's highest +212 gold difference per minute and the second-best K/D ratio of 1.41.

Fnatic's quality is undeniable, but they have the tendency to shoot themselves in the foot by overextending or simply paying with too much confidence. This likely will not be an issue against G2 Esports, but facing their rivals could present Fnatic with another challenge.

Fnatic have historically choked against G2 Esports in the playoffs despite entering the series in better form. So the real question is whether the Black & Orange can avoid making the same mistake again.

Fnatic Squad & Team News

No changes for Fnatic.

  • Óscar "Oscarinin" Muñoz – top lane
  • Iván "Razork" Martín – jungle
  • Marek "Humanoid" Brázda – mid lane
  • Elias "Upset" Lipp – ADC
  • Mihael "Mikyx" Mehle – support

G2 Esports Form

G2 Esports have held relatively well during the LEC 2025 Spring regular season. While they've not reached the same heights expected of them, G2 had some good games, granted, just as many iffy displays.

Consistency has not been G2's strong suit this season, which could be a very good reason to fade them against any of the elite LEC teams. At the end of the day, they've lost to Fnatic and Karmine Corp and even against some lesser squads in Team BDS and GIANTX.

One thing G2 Esports have going for them is that they consistently find new gear in the playoffs, which is quite the opposite of Fnatic, who tend to slow down in the knockout stage. But is that a good enough reason to take G2's side?

G2 Esports Squad & Team News

G2 Esports have not made any roster changes.

  • Sergen "BrokenBlade" Çelik – top lane
  • Rudy "SkewMond" Semaan – jungle
  • Rasmus "Caps" Winther – mid lane
  • Steven "Hans Sama" Liv – ADC
  • Labros "Labrov" Papoutsakis – support

Verdict

By the numbers, Fnatic should win without any issues on Saturday. On the other side, the history between G2 Esports and Fnatic in the playoff series favours the latter.

While there is a chance that Fnatic choke as they tend to when faced with G2 Esports, I would much prefer to trust the numbers. Unlike G2 Esports, who have been all over the place this season, Fnatic have been posting much better performance figures.

Admittedly, the Black & Orange can be a bit inconsistent, but as long as they do not shoot themselves in the foot, they should come out ahead.
