About League of Legends Pro League (LPL)

The regional Chinese tournament that feeds the international mega-contests is known as the League of Legends Pro League or LPL.

The LPL is the highest level of professional LoL Esports in China with the first edition of the LPL was held in the spring of 2013.

In 2014, Riot Games began providing an English broadcast of the tournament, modeled on the League of Legends Champions Korea or LCK - another Riot Games-operated league that takes place in the neighboring country of South Korea.

In 2019, Riot Games and Tencent created a joint venture called TJ Sports to focus on the entirety of the League of Legends esports business in China, taking the competitive landscape of League of Legends to new heights.

LPL Format & Tournament Structure

In 2013 and 2014, eight teams competed in a single-round robin stage, with the four best teams advancing to the playoffs.

Playoff matches were held in a best-of-five format, and all games were a draft pick. In the Grand Final, teams from the winners’ bracket would start with a 1-0 advantage

From 2013 to 2015, the group stages of the tournament played out over a best-of-two format. Teams scoring 2:0 would receive 3 points, and they would both get the point each for tying the game at 1-1.The games followed a double-round robin, ensuring that all teams would face each other twice.

Rankings would be determined by total points, and the top 4 teams would advance to the playoffs. The playoffs stage would then follow a format typical to that of any sporting tournament, where losing teams would be eliminated.

From 2019 onwards, 16 teams would compete in the opening stage as a single group. Every game played is decided by the best-of-three and follows a single round-robin format. The top eight teams from the group stages then advance to the playoffs.

In the playoff stages, all matches are best-of-five. Teams placing first and second in the playoffs directly qualify for the semifinals. Third and fourth-place teams qualify for the quarterfinals. The bottom three teams from the playoffs stage head to round 1 of the tournament.
