MAD Lions vs T1 Predictions

MAD Lions and T1 will clash in the second round of the Mid-Season Invitational 2023 Bracket Stage in what is expected to be a very one-sided fixture.

Esports betting sites have T1 priced as 1.025 favourites to defeat MAD Lions, who enter the match as 10.50 underdogs. At the offered betting odds, the bookmakers are implying that T1 have a 97.6% chance of winning the best-of-five (Bo5) series, which, while it might sound right, is an absurd price.

Although T1 are arguably one of the top contenders to win the whole tournament, the offered LoL betting odds are a bit too crazy in my book, which begs the question of whether we should back the underdogs or not.

  • T1 are the second-favourites to win the tournament
  • MAD Lions got lucky to win LEC 2023 Spring
  • A seemingly impossible task for MAD Lions

Head to Head

MAD Lions and T1 have never met before.

MAD Lions Form

MAD Lions are the reigning LoL EMEA Championship (LEC) champions and the top-seeded team from Europe. However, I would argue that MAD Lions aren’t as good as G2 Esports, so despite what the regular-season results might suggest, MAD are less likely to make a splash at the MSI 2023 than their regional rivals.

That doesn’t necessarily have to do with how the MSI 2023 Bracket Stage draw ended, but it certainly doesn’t help that MAD Lions got paired with T1, the current second-favourites to win the whole thing (3.50).

Regular season performance metrics-wise, MAD Lions look good compared to T1, but we’re comparing numbers from two leagues, where LCK is overall stronger than LEC. But even with all that in mind, is it fair to price T1 at 1.025 to defeat MAD Lions?

MAD Lions Squad & Team News

No changes for MAD Lions.

  • Kim "Chasy" Dong-hyeon – top lane
  • Javier "Elyoya" Prades Batalla – jungle
  • Yasin "Nisqy" Dinçer – mid lane
  • Matyáš "Carzzy" Orság – ADC
  • Zdravets "Hylissang" Iliev Galabov – support

T1 Form

As noted, T1 are one of the leading candidates to win the MSI 2023, and that’s hardly an overstatement. This is the most successful team in the history of LoL, and they’ve looked incredible over the last two years, especially at international tournaments.

Even though T1 haven’t won an international event since 2017, they’ve made the semifinals of the LoL World Championship 2021 and finals of MSI 2022 and LoL Worlds 2022. Aven domestically, T1 couldn't make the final push, losing the last two LCK splits to Gen.G in the finals - including in the LCK 2023 Spring finals. But that doesn't take away from the fact that this is an incredibly stacked team with elite players across all positions.

So even though T1 have a history of slipping at the final hurdle, they’re always in the race for the gold medal, and that won’t change here.

T1 Squad & Team News

T1 will play with their usual lineup.

  • Choi "Zeus" Woo-je – top lane
  • Mun "Oner" Hyeon-jun – jungle
  • Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok – mid lane
  • Lee "Gumayusi" Min-hyeong – ADC
  • Ryu "Keria" Min-seok – support

As the LoL betting odds suggest, T1 should win, but from a betting perspective, you must ask yourself whether it’s too crazy to take a smaller position on MAD Lions. They might have overperformed in the regular season, but it would be a very "MAD Lions thing" to randomly defeat T1.

It’s an interesting thought and maybe an exciting bet for some, but even at 10.5, I’m not touching it.

However, I like a bet on MAD Lions to steal a map at 2.20. They’re objectively weaker than T1; however, historically, LEC representatives do well against Korean LoL teams mainly due to European teams’ ability to play unusual compositions and bring some chaos into the game – which Korean squads aren’t used to dealing with.
