Top Esports vs FunPlus Phoenix Predictions

Top Esports and FunPlus Phoenix will clash on Wednesday, June 14, in Week 3 of the LPL 2023 Summer. The two Chinese League of Legends teams last met in the final week of the LPL 2023 Spring, when Top Esports won 2-0.

Top Esports enter this match as 1.12 favourites to defeat FunPlus Phoenix, who are priced as 5.50 underdogs. The offered odds make plenty of sense, considering Top Esports are in much better form than FunPlus Phoenix, who’ve lost their last three games.

  • Top Esports are on a four-game winning streak
  • FunPlus Phoenix won a map against LNG Esports last week
  • FPX are struggling

Head to Head

FunPlus Phoenix and Top Esports last met in the final week of the LPL 2023 Spring, when Top Esports won 2-0.

  • Top Esports 2-0 FunPlus Phoenix – March 23, 2023

Top Esports Form

Top Esports are in excellent form, and based on what they’ve shown over the last week, there are very few reasons to doubt them and their chances to compete for top spots. It’s still early into the season, so a lot can change, but TES have yet to give me a reason to question their quality.

I wouldn’t rank them as the best team in the LPL, but Bilibili Gaming and JD Gaming are the only two teams who might have a higher ceiling. Nevertheless, Top Esports looked good in their recent outings, and besides their slip-up against ThunderTalk Gaming (2-1) on Friday, TES are looking very good.

Top Esports Squad & Team News

No changes for TES.

  • Huang "Wayward" Ren-Xing – top lane
  • Gao "Tian" Tian-Liang – jungle
  • Song "Rookie" Eui-jin – mid lane
  • Yu "JackeyLove" Wen-Bo – ADC
  • Ling "Mark" Xu – support

FunPlus Phoenix Form

FunPlus Phoenix are 1-3 ahead of this match and on a three-game losing streak. They won their first match of the split against ThunderTalk (2-0) but then lost against Ultra Prime (0-2), Rare Atom (0-2), and LNG Esports (1-2).

Winning a map against LNG Esports is nothing to sneeze at, but it was more LNG Esports throwing a game than FunPlus Phoenix showing anything remarkable. So if we look at FPX’s map win against LNG the right way, FunPlus Phoenix have shown nothing and are objectively an awful team.

The only team I would rank below FunPlus Phoenix is Anyone’s Legend, but even that doesn’t tell much since AL might be the worst team across all major regions. Not everything is as grim as it may seem – FPX might get better with time, but until that happens, I’ll continue to doubt them and their chances to accomplish much in LPL 2023 Summer.

FunPlus Phoenix Squad & Team News

FunPlus Phoenix have not announced any player swaps ahead of this match, but we could see some changes in the bot land and jungle.

  • Ping "Xiaolaohu" Xiao-Hu – top lane
  • Lee "Bonnie" Gwang-su – jungle
  • Yang "H4cker" Zhi-Hao – jungle
  • Yang "Care" Jie – mid lane
  • Lin "Lwx" Wei-Xiang – ADC
  • Qian "Xingye" Ze – ADC
  • Zhang "QiuQiu" Ming – support

Verdict

FunPlus Phoenix are a terrible team, and anyone who has watched them play can agree. They’ve shown noting this split, and even though stealing a map against LNG Esports looks good, it mostly had to do with LNG Esports letting FunPlus Phoenix win than FPX earning the map win.

So when betting on this match, the question is really only whether Top Esports will choke or not, and not so much whether FunPlus Phoenix are good enough to do some damage – they’re not. Top Esports, while historically an inconsistent team, are known to do well against weaker teams, so I have no concerns about them slipping here.
