About Mobile Legends

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang first released in 2016, a mobile multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that was developed and published by Moonton.

The gameplay was initially compared to Riot Games’ League of Legends, and following a lawsuit in 2017, Moonton released a number of updates for remodeling and distinction.

MLBB became a huge success, with the game crossing 1 billion downloads, and hit the 100 million daily players mark in 2021.

Like most MOBAs, there was always going to be potential for a thriving esports scene, and it wasn’t long before Moonton tapped into it.

They hosted the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Southeast Asia Cup in 2017, the first ever official MLBB esports competition.

It involved teams from different Southeast Asian including Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and more, and they were selected through a series of local qualifiers.

Next year, a series of regional leagues, the MLBB Professional Leagues were established to determine the top teams from each region feeding into the Southeast Asia Cup.

The MLBB World Championship began in 2019.

Mobile Legends eSports Structure

The World Championship, or the M-series, is MLBB’s marquee esports event of the year.

The first edition M1 was hosted in Kuala Lumpur and involved 16 teams from across the world, competing among a $250,000 prize pool.

It’s organized by Moonton, and sponsored by Tiktok, Secretlab, Esports Charts, and Gank.

The 16 teams will be determined from the winners and/or runners-up of the MPL regional leagues.

Here’s how the seeds are allocated:

  • 2 seeds from MPL Malaysia
  • 2 seeds from MPL Indonesia
  • 2 seeds from MPL Philippines
  • 2 seeds from MLBB Latin America Super League (MLSL)
  • 1 seed from MPL Singapore
  • 1 seed from MPL Brazil
  • 1 seed from MPL Cambodia
  • 1 seed from MPL MENA
  • 1 seed from Türkiye Şampiyonası
  • 1 seed from North America Challenger Tournament (NACT)
  • 1 seed from the Myanmar Qualifier
  • 1 seed from the Mekong Qualifier

The Southeast Asia Cup is the longest-running MLBB tournament currently, offering a prize pool of $300,000. It involves participation from the following leagues:

  • Two seeds from MPL Indonesia
  • Two seeds from MPL Philippines
  • Two seeds from MPL Malaysia
  • Two seeds from MPL Singapore
  • Two seeds from MPL Cambodia Spring
  • One seed each from the Myanmar and Mekong Qualifiers

The ONE Esports MPL Invitational is another tournament that began in 2020. It involves 20 teams, with a prize pool of $100,000 shared between them.

It takes place during the off-season after the league’s second split, and before the start of the World Championship. It includes:

  • 8 teams from MPL Indonesia
  • 6 teams from MPL Philippines
  • 3 teams from MPL Malaysia
  • 2 teams from MPL Singapore
  • 1 team from MPL Cambodia

Qualification For Mobile Legends Tournaments

The World Championship is played across two stages, the Group Stage and Knockout Stage.

In the former, the 16 teams will be drawn into four groups of four each, and each team will play each other once in a single round robin. All matches in the stage will be best-of-one.

There is no elimination at this stage, but each team’s seed determines their bracket in the next round.

The knockout stage is a double elimination gauntlet. The top two teams from each group proceed to the upper bracket of the playoffs, while the rest drop to the lower bracket.

Here’s how the $800,000 prize pool is distributed among the 16 teams:

  • Winners get $300,000
  • Runners-up get $120,000
  • 3rd seed gets $80,000
  • 4th seed gets $55,000
  • 5th-6th seed gets $40,000
  • 7th-8th seed gets $30,000
  • 9th-12th seed gets $15,000
  • 13th-16th seed gets $10,000

The three longest-running regional leagues are the ones from Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Up until 2021, the Malaysia and Singapore regions were represented in a single league.

Each league has two splits conducted every year, with the top seeds from the second or fall split advancing to the World Championship.

The Philippines and the Indonesian leagues involve eight teams each, while the Malaysian league features ten teams.

The MPL Malaysia offers a prize pool of $300,000 for each split, while the MPL Philippines is capped at $150,000 and the Indonesian league offers $100,000.

The MENA league also began in 2022, representing the middle-east and North Africa regions and offering a prize pool of $107,500 to its participating eight teams.
