NRG Esports haven’t looked too good early into the season, with defeats against Leviatan (0-2), MiBR (1-2), and Cloud9 (1-2). But they found momentum at the end of Week 4 when NRG defeated KRU Esports (2-0) and have since added two more wins against 100 Thieves (2-0) and FURIA Esports (2-1) to keep themselves in the race for a top-six finish.

But while NRG are still in the battle for a spot in the playoffs, they need to defeat LOUD to lock themselves in, which should inspire better showing. However, based on what we’ve seen from NRG lately, they don’t need to improve much to be competitive – the question is whether LOUD will withstand the new and improved NRG on Sunday.

LOUD are billed as the strongest team from VCT 2023 Americas League, and that isn’t too far from the truth. Admittedly, they might be the second-best team (behind Cloud9), but LOUD are up there with the best.

They’ve yet to lose a game this season, which is seriously impressive, but a closer look at their recent showings unveils a different picture.

Since Week 4, LOUD have dropped a map against Sentinels (1-2), Evil Geniuses (1-2), and even KRU Esports (1-2). They looked better last week, when LOUD swept 100 Thieves (2-0), yet again nearly dropped a map as they needed overtime on Split (15-13) to come out ahead.

Undeniably a very solid team, but LOUD have holes, which NRG can exploit and hand them their first loss of the year.

Verdict

NRG Esports v LOUD

On paper, LOUD look much stronger than NRG Esports, but the eye test would prove that the two teams are not that far apart. NRG have looked very good in their recent outings, and I was particularly impressed with their decision-making, which seems to be on-point.

Even though NRG blundered their early season, their last few games convinced me that they’re good enough to be one of the top contenders in the Americas League. LOUD are still an incredible team, but they’ve shown weakness and are known for losing maps, which should make NRG’s job much easier.
