Apeks did not have the most promising run through the VCT 2025: Kickoff tournament and opted to freshen up their roster with the signing of Governor. However, while he is a decent addition to the struggling roster, one player will not fix the issues Apeks had earlier this season.

Team Heretics are one of the regions’ top teams and rightly priced as the favourites to start Stage 1 with a win. While Apeks have had a long time to prepare for this match, the quality difference between the two outfits is significant enough to believe Heretics can win without giving away anything.

Team Heretics had a rough start to the year. After an impressive run through the 2024 VALORANT esports season when Heretics placed second in VALORANT Masters Shanghai and VALORANT Champions 2024, they had to settle for a third-place finish in VCT 2025: EMEA Kickoff, with losses to Team Liquid and Team Vitality.

While finishing third does not look terrible, it was way below the expectations for the world’s second-best team of 2024.

With a chip on their shoulders and the talent to compete for top spots, Team Heretics can not afford any more slip-ups and will want nothing less than a strong start to VCT 2025: EMEA Stage 1.

Yet it remains to be seen whether the added time off was enough for them to iron out their wrinkles and prove what they’re capable of.

Apeks were the worst-performing team of VCT 2025: EMEA Kickoff, where they placed last with losses to Gentle Mates (0-2) and Team Liquid (1-2). In their defence, Apeks took a map off Liquid, but even that was a complete fluke.

For Stage 1, Apeks signed a new player from TALON, Governor, who is a good addition but not enough for me to believe Apeks will be serious title contenders or even a strong mid-table team.

While Apeks could surprise some squads if they took the off time to work on their weaknesses, there is little to suggest they can stand up against the reigning world championsip finalists.

Verdict

Team Heretics v Apeks

Team Heretics are heavily favoured to defeat Apeks on Thursday, and that makes a lot of sense. This is the same roster who made the finals of the 2024 world championship, and while thie run through the VCT 2025 EMEA Kickoff was far from perfect, it is hard to judge a team based on three games alone.

The same argument can be used to defend Apeks for their lacklustre showing at the start of the season, but the eye test proves Apeks are not at the same level as some of the top teams in VCT EMEA.
