The IPL has introduced temporary replacement players for the last phase of the 2025 season.

Some plausible reasons are because several players are uncertain of their return, particularly because their franchises may already be eliminated, and international commitments, which have forced the hand of several boards, such as the ECB and Cricket South Africa.

No Retentions Possible

While the IPL has brought in this new rule for this specific season, the league also mentioned that replacements that have been brought in won’t be eligible to be retained next season.

"Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament," the IPL said in a statement.

"This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026."

Several Players Withdraw

On Wednesday, a few players including Jake Fraser-McGurk of Delhi Capitals and Jamie Overton of Chennai Super Kings withdrew from the remainder of the season.

Delhi signed Mustafizur Rahman as the replacement for Fraser-McGurk. Delhi are still awaiting news on Mitchell Starc, Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs, who are now regular selections in the playing XI for Delhi Capitals.

Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal was brought in by RCB as a replacement for Devdutt Paddikal, who was injured.

Rajasthan Royals signed Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Nandre Burger prior to the suspension of the IPL.
