India captain Rohit Sharma confirmed he is not retiring from ODIs despite several rumours floating around that the ICC Champions Trophy may have been his last tournament in the format.
No future plan, says Rohit
After winning the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday, Rohit mentioned that his time in the ODI format is not done yet. India went unbeaten in the Champions Trophy, winning five matches in one of the most one-sided tournaments in recent times.
"I'm not going to retire from this format, just to make sure that no rumours are spread going forward," he said at the press conference. “Future plan, there's no future plan, whatever is happening will keep happening."
“It is a great team achievement for the team to win two ICC trophies and to go undefeated is the icing on the cake. I have seen very few teams that have won two tournaments undefeated. For us, the most important thing was that we come here and prepared and played the opposition,” he said.
India Thrash NZ in Final
New Zealand chose to bat and dominated the first 10 overs of the final with attacking batting from Will Young and Rachin Ravindra. However, that is where their dominance ended as the spinners put the brakes on the scoring.
Rohit Sharma then aced the chase with 76 off 83 balls in one of his best recent innings. India eventually chased down New Zealand’s score of 252 with four wickets and an over to spare.
"That shows the quality in the team. A lot of depth. A lot of understanding within the group. A lot of excitement. And that is how we want to play our cricket. That's what we had spoken before the tournament - that there's too much pressure on the outside. If one game, India loses, or the match goes here and there, there's so much speculation that happens,” Rohit said.
India Win 23 Of 24 Matches
In the last three ICC events, India have won 23 out of 24 matches, with two trophies and one runners-up result. The only loss in this period was against Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad in 2023.
That is the kind of dominance that Australia displayed in the early 2000s, which helped them earn three successive ODI World Cups, in 1999, 2003 and 2007.
"That's a great, great milestone to have, honestly speaking," Rohit said. "It speaks to the kind of team this is. I know we reached the ODI World Cup and lost that final. But then we went to the T20 World Cup and didn't lose a single game. We went on to win the trophy here as well.”
