Auckland FC vs Wellington Phoenix Preview

Auckland beat Wellington Phoenix 2-0 in the first-ever all-New Zealand clash in the A-League, but it took two late goals to seal the win. I think Phoenix can gain revenge and end Auckland's unbeaten start.

Head To Head

This will be the second derby showdown between the two teams, with Auckland prevailing 2-0 back in Round 3 after Jake Brimmer netted a late double in the 89th and 96th minutes.

Auckland FC Form

Auckland's form heading into this contest is perfect with the A-League new boys winning all five of their games without conceding a single goal.

It's been an extraordinary start to the season - in fact, Auckland have become just the second team in Australian National Leagues history to win their opening five games after Sydney's Western Suburbs all the way back in 1977.

Auckland have conquered Brisbane Roar, Sydney FC, Wellington, Macarthur FC and the Newcastle Jets during their explosive start to the campaign.

Steve Corica's side left it late and had to dig deep again in their most-recent outing against the Jets last week, with Colombian recruit Neyder Moreno coming off the bench to break the deadlock in the 83rd minute before Frances De Vries secured the 2-0 victory six minutes later.

There's question marks surrounding the fitness of captain Hiroki Sakai, with the Japanese star battling a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the win over Newcastle.

Wellington Phoenix Form

Wellington Phoenix currently sit in fourth spot on the ladder after winning three of their five games.

Wellington's only defeat for the season came in Kiwi Clasico back in Round 3, with the club responding brilliantly to beat the Mariners 3-0 in their following fixture.

Phoenix proceeded to reel off a big upset during Unite Round, absorbing plenty of pressure before toppling Melbourne Victory 1-0, with Kosta Barbarouses scoring the winner in the 82nd minute.

Giancarlo Italiano's side come into this encounter fresh off the bye and eager to avenge their derby defeat from earlier in the campaign.

Fin Conchie and Lukas Kelly-Heald both remain sidelined with injury.

Verdict

Auckland deserve all the accolades, but I do think they've benefitted from a kind early draw, with the team only playing one game outside New Zealand across seven rounds.

Auckland left it late against Wellington in Round 3 and also against a struggling Jets side last week. Their winning streak has to end at some stage and Phoenix look good value to come away with at least a share of the spoils here.
