Head to Head
Sydney FC hold a 15-9 record over City in the head-to-head with nine draws played in 33 encounters.
The last time they met was in last season’s Grand Final where the Sky Blues lifted the cup after a 1-0 win in extra time. It was a goal off the shoulder of fullback Rhyan Grant’s which led Sydney to a record breaking fifth A-League title.
Melbourne City Form
City’s season hangs in the balance after three consecutive losses.
Their first loss came against Perth Glory, where City failed to convert several opportunities and even struck the post twice in their 3-1 defeat at home.
Things then went from bad to worse when they surrendered a two goal lead against the Central Coast Mariners to lose 3-2 in Gosford.
With the match tied at 2-2, City defender Kerrin Stokes was sent off for a last man challenge which saw Central Coast take full advantage late in the match.
City would then go down 1-0 to the bottom placed Newcastle Jets away from home, where they again squandered many opportunities in front of goal.
They were unable to travel to Sydney to face the Wanderers due to Melbourne going into lockdown.
Melbourne City Injuries & Team News
Portuguese import Nuno Reis was fast-tracked into the side in the last match to fill in for the suspended stokes.
Defensive midfielder Rostyn Griffiths has missed several weeks due to injury and is in contention to return.
Sydney FC Form
The reigning champions have returned to form in 2021.
Sydney responded to a shock 2-0 loss to the Mariners by defeating Macarthur 3-0 away from home.
The Sky Blues took full advantage of the Bulls being reduced to ten-men. Academy product Patrick Wood netted a debut brace, while veteran Milos Ninkovic also contributed with a goal.
Sydney then made it two wins from two when they defeated Wellington 2-1 in their most recent match. A brace for winger Kosta Barbarouses was all the Sky Blues needed as they recorded their third win of the season.
A recent lockdown in Melbourne saw Sydney’s match against Western United postponed.
Sydney FC Injuries & Team News
Left back Michael Zullo is about a week away from returning from a calf injury, while young attacker Harry Van der Saag will also miss with an ankle issue.
The Sky Blues lost Chris Zuvela in their win last week, with the midfielder rupturing his ACL.
Brazilian forward Bobo is still trying to prove his fitness after the 36-year-old signed with the club in January.
Verdict
While Melbourne City have created plenty of chances in recent weeks, Sydney’s recent record at AAMI Park speaks for itself. I’m tipping BTTS and a Sydney win.
