Melbourne City vs Wellington Phoenix Predictions

Melbourne City have been unstoppable this season, especially at home. Their forward Jamie Maclaren also continues to dominate. While Wellington have improved, their record against City in Melbourne has been poor.

I’m backing over 3.5 goals and City to win with Maclaren to score.

  • Melbourne City have won their last 4 matches (A-League).
  • Melbourne City have seen over 3.5 goals in their last 4 matches (A-League).
  • City’s Jamie Maclaren has scored 24 goals in his last 19 matches (A-League)
  • Melbourne City have won their last 3 home matches against Wellington (A-League).
  • Wellington have seen over 3.5 goals in 3 of their last 4 matches against Melbourne City (A-League).

Head to Head

Melbourne City have a 15-11 record in the head-to-head with six draws in 32 encounters.

Their last meeting ended in a thrilling 3-2 contest won by City. Substitute Marco Tilio netted the winning goal in the 83rd minute, with both goalkeepers having plenty to do on the night.

Melbourne City Form

Melbourne City are proving near unbeatable, especially at home.

Despite conceding early against Perth, City bounced back with striker Jamie Maclaren netting a brace as they went on to win 3-1 away from home.

A 3-2 win against Brisbane followed, with City overcoming a valiant Roar outfit at home.

Midfielder Connor Metcalfe and captain Scott Jamieson both scored inside the opening 20 minutes, before Brisbane hit back with two of their own.

It would take a volley from City defender Scott Galloway to wrap up the three points late in the match.

City then recorded their fourth straight win in a 4-1 dismantling of Adelaide. Maclaren was again pivotal with a brace, while fullbacks Jamieson and Galloway also added to the scoresheet.

Melbourne City Injuries & Team News

City’s last win was bittersweet with the side losing winger Andrew Nabbout to injury. The Socceroo went off in the 28th minute with a suspected adductor injury.

Wellington Phoenix Form

While Wellington have turned their season around, they have failed to capitalise on their opportunities in recent matches.

The Phoenix came from a goal behind to beat Adelaide 2-1 at home. Striker Ben Waine equalised just after half-time before Israeli forward Tomer Hemed slotted a penalty.

A goalless draw against Brisbane followed in extremely wet conditions before they were forced to share the points the following week with Adelaide in their rematch.

Wellington were left ruing missed opportunities, especially after Adelaide’s Ryan Strain was sent off in the 79th minute.

Wellington Phoenix Injuries & Team News

Defender Luke DeVere is still out with a knee injury.
