Melbourne City vs Western United Predictions

Melbourne City have seen BTTS in three of their last four against Western United and City’s Jamie Maclaren has an impressive record against the green and black. I’m backing BTTS with Jamie Maclaren to score.

  • Melbourne City have seen BTTS in 4 of their last 7 home matches (A-League).
  • Western United have seen BTTS in 3 of their last 4 against City (A-League).
  • Jamie Maclaren has scored 7 goals in his last 4 matches against Western United (A-League).

Head to Head

These two sides have met four times, with Melbourne City holding a perfect 4-0 record.

Their last meeting was in last season’s A-League semi-finals with Melbourne City pulling away late to record a 2-0 win.

Jamie Maclaren opened the scoring with a 68th minute penalty before City’s place in the Grand Final was sealed via a Tomoki Imai own goal.

Maclaren scored in all four meetings between the two sides last season. The Socceroo scored seven goals against Western United in 2019/20, including two braces.

Melbourne City Form

Melbourne City had an ambivalent opening two weeks of the new season.

Their first match ended in a scrappy 1-0 win away to Brisbane Roar, with midfielder Connor Metcalfe’s 52nd minute goal separating the two sides. Goalkeeper Tom Glover was instrumental late in the match, keeping out several Brisbane chances to guarantee the win.

City then travelled to Adelaide but fell short in a 2-0 defeat to Adelaide United. A red card to captain Scott Jamieson was the catalyst to the side’s downfall with City conceding immediately after the defender’s sending off.

Melbourne City Injuries & Team News

City will be without Scott Jamieson in this match, with the defender serving a one-match ban.

Midfielder Adrian Luna will return from suspension, while right-back Nathaniel Atkinson remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Western United Form

Western United are without a win from their last two matches, with their 2019/20 season ending in a 2-0 defeat to Melbourne City.

Mark Rudan’s side are yet to play 2021 and have been forced into a second pre-season after their last two matches were postponed. The only competitive football Western United have played this season was their opening round draw with Adelaide United.

Despite the match finishing 0-0, Western United found themselves lucky not concede as they were forced to clear two Adelaide chances off the line.

Western United Injuries & Team News

Head coach Mark Rudan admitted several players – including captain Alessandro Diamanti – came into their first match underdone. The extended break between games may therefore act as a blessing ahead the club’s return to competitive football.

Defender Josh Risdon remains the only notable absence, with the Socceroo expected to be sidelined for another two months with a tibia injury.

Spanish midfielder Iker Guarrotxena is a chance to debut for the club after officially becoming a Western United player during the week and declaring himself fit to play.
