Melbourne Victory vs Adelaide United Preview

Bitter rivals Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United have plenty at stage at AAMI Park on Saturday as the clash for a place in the Australia Cup final. I'm backing Victory to make the most of home advantage.

  • Melbourne Victory have scored exactly 4 goals in their 3 Australia Cup games
  • Melbourne Victory have won the last 2 matches against Adelaide United
  • Adelaide United have seen BTTS in 4 of the last 5 matches against Melbourne Victory
  • Adelaide United have seen BTTS in all 3 of their Australia Cup games

Head To Head

Adelaide have only defeated Victory once in the last 10 meetings between the teams.

Victory have won the last two encounters, while they also knocked the Reds out of the Australia Cup quarter-finals in 2022.

Melbourne Victory Form

It's been a great start to life as Melbourne Victory coach for Patrick Kisnorbo after former boss Tony Popovic quit the club following the heartbreak of last season's A-League Grand Final defeat to the Mariners.

Victory have surged into the Australia Cup semi-finals in dominant fashion, scoring four goals in all of their wins so far - with all of those triumphs have coming on the road.

Victory defeated Lambton Jaffas 4-1 in the Round of 32 and backed it up with back-to-back 4-0 wins over NWS Spirit and Moreton City Excelsior.

Former Olympiakos and Panathinaikos striker Nikos Vergas looks the goods already, with the Greek scoring three goals in his last two appearances in the Cup.

Adelaide United Form

Adelaide have been forced to battle and scrap their way into the final four of the Australia Cup.

It was a disappointing A-League campaign for the Reds last season, with Carl Veart's side failing to make the finals and winning just nine of their 27 games.

They have showcased some steely resolve in this Australia Cup run, surviving extra-time tussles with Blacktown City in the Round of 32 and Western Sydney Wanderers in the quarter-finals.

They also edged out Olympic Kingsway 3-2 in the Round of 16 in between.

Homegrown midfielder Austin Ayoubi, who signed on from the MetroStars, has impressed this campaign, scoring in the victories over the Wanderers and Kingsway.

Verdict

Victory haven't played an A-League side yet on their way to the semi-finals, but they've looked strong. Adelaide can get on the scoresheet, but I'm backing the hosts to have too much firepower.
