Head to Head
Melbourne Victory have a 19-18 record against the Jets in the head-to-head with 10 draws from their 47 encounters.
Their last meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in Newcastle last year. Jets striker Roy O’Donovan opened the scoring for the home side before then Victory captain Ola Toivonen equalised just after half time.
Melbourne Victory Form
It’s been a difficult season for the Victory who have had to deal with going into lockdown, postponing matches and suffering heavy defeats.
The Victory crashed back down to earth after a 2-1 win over Perth and a promising 0-0 draw against Western United.
Reality hit the side in the form of a 5-2 loss away to Brisbane Roar. The Victory conceded four by half time in their worst defeat since 2016.
This was followed by a 2-0 loss away to Western Sydney, with the Victory losing New Zealand international Marco Rojas to a concussion as well.
Melbourne Victory Injuries & Team News
Rojas will miss the clash after requiring several stitches to his face following a high boot from Wanderers midfielder Graham Dorrans.
French import Rudy Gestede made his return from a hamstring injury off the bench and will be in contention to start this week.
Socceroos forward Robbie Kruse has also returned to full fitness for the first time in 18 months. Kruse has been rested regularly this season but should see plenty of first-team football after an extended break.
Ex-Wigan winger Callum McManaman is also a chance to return, with the 29-year-old sidelined since the second match with an ankle injury
Newcastle Jets Form
Newcastle are on a four match unbeaten run and have rectified their poor start to the season.
It took until their fifth match to notch up their first win after four straight losses. Goals to strikers Roy O’Donovan and Valentino Yuel guided the Jets to a 2-1 win over Wellington.
The Jets then held Western Sydney to a 1-1 draw, before upsetting Melbourne City at home with a narrow 1-0.
Yuel’s 40th minute goal was enough to seal Newcastle’s second win of the season and their first at home for 2021. They managed to back this up with a 0-0 draw against then league leaders Brisbane Roar in their most recent match.
Newcastle Jets Injuries & Team News
Defender Ali Abbas is a chance to return after recovering from a hamstring injury, while midfielder Ben Kantarovski is still out with a calf injury.
