Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne City Predictions

Melbourne City have solidified themselves as the team to beat this season. Their striker Jamie Maclaren leads the golden boot, while Wellington have only won two out of eight home matches.

I’m backing over 2.5 goals and City to win, with Maclaren to score.

  • Wellington Phoenix have seen over 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 5 matches (A-League).
  • Wellington have seen over 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 4 home matches (A-League).
  • Melbourne City have won 6 of their last 7 matches (A-League).
  • City’s Jamie Maclaren has scored 12 goals in his last 11 matches (A-League).
  • Melbourne City have seen over 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 5 matches (A-League).

Head to Head

Melbourne City have a 14-11 record in the head-to-head with six draws in 31 matches.

A 60th minute goal to David Ball was enough for the Phoenix as they held on for a 1-0 win against City the last time they met.

Wellington Phoenix Form

Wellington have jumped back into finals contention after a steady few weeks in the league.

The Phoenix walked away with a point in a 1-1 draw against Brisbane. Wellington striker Tomer Hemed opened the scoring just after half-time with the Roar equalising in the 86th minute.

An emphatic 4-1 win against Melbourne Victory followed at home. The Phoenix had four separate goalscorers on the night with Hemed, strikers David Ball, Clayton Lewis and captain Ulises Davila all contributing.

But this momentum would come to a halt in a 1-0 loss away to Macarthur.

Wellington Phoenix Injuries & Team News

.
Defender Luke DeVere remains sidelined with a knee injury, though has been replaced by ex-Newcastle defender Steven Taylor.

Melbourne City Form

Melbourne City have taken the competition by storm and sit as the championship favourites at the half-way point.

City dethroned league leaders Central Coast Mariners with a 2-0 win at home. Striker Jamie Maclaren opened the scoring before right-back Nathaniel Atkinson sealed the win.

A 4-1 win against Western Sydney then notched up the club’s sixth consecutive victory. Ex-Bolton winger Craig Noone starred with a brace while Socceroos Andrew Nabbout and Maclaren also scored.

This run came to an end at the hands of their Victorian neighbours Western United. Despite opening the scoring through Noone, City conceded twice in five minutes to lose 2-1.

Melbourne City Injuries & Team News

Former Burnley midfielder Aiden O’Neill is still out with a back injury.

Defender Nuno Reis returned from a groin injury in the loss to Western United.

Captain Scott Jamieson will be a chance to return after he missed the last match with a calf strain.
