Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory Predictions

Wellington Phoenix have returned to form with some impressive performances at home. They face a Victory side whom they have struggled to beat in recent years both home and away.

I’m backing over 2.5 goals and a 2-2 draw.

  • Wellington have seen over 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 6 home matches (A-League).
  • Wellington are unbeaten in 3 of their last 4 matches (A-League).
  • Wellington have drawn 5 of their last 8 matches against Melbourne Victory (A-League).
  • Melbourne Victory are unbeaten in 7 of their last 8 against Wellington (A-League).
  • Melbourne Victory have seen over 2.5 goals in their last 3 matches (A-League).

Head to Head

Melbourne Victory have a 21-9 advantage in the head-to-head with 11 draws in 41 matches.

The Victory got the better of the Phoenix last time out. Striker Rudy Gestede starred with a four minute brace as he guided his side to a 2-0 win at home.

Wellington Phoenix Form

Wellington seem to have finally adopted to life in Wollongong.

The Phoenix recorded a commanding 3-0 win over Perth midfielder Reno Piscopo scoring his first of the season. Strikers David Ball and Ben Waine also contributed on the scoresheet in Wellington’s biggest win of 2021.

The goals kept coming for Wellington, with their next match ending in a 4-3 loss against Western Sydney. Israeli forward Tomer Hemed had a goal controversially ruled out by the VAR after his shoulder was found to be offside.

They managed to pick themselves up nicely in their next match as they shared the points with Brisbane in a 1-1 draw, with Hemed getting his goal in the 42nd minute.

Wellington Phoenix Injuries & Team News

Centre back Luke DeVere is still nursing a knee injury which will see him sidelined for another two months.

Melbourne Victory Form

Melbourne Victory have lost their last three matches in the league.

Despite an impressive comeback against Western United where they rectified a 3-1 deficit, the Victory would go on to lose 4-3 after a 95th minute goal. Midfielder Jacob Butterfield scored his debut goal, while ex-Middlesbrough striker Rudy Gestede headed home his third for the season.

The following week saw the club suffer its greatest ever defeat at the hands of Melbourne City. A 6-0 loss in the derby was followed by a 3-1 loss against Adelaide.

Their match against Sydney FC last week was cancelled due to the pitch being waterlogged after torrential rain in Sydney.

Melbourne Victory Injuries & Team News

Defenders Ryan Shotton and Dylan Ryan will again sit out with groin and knee injuries respectively.

New Zealand international Marco Rojas’ season could be over as scans last week discovered a fracture in his leg.
