Western Sydney Wanderers vs Macarthur Predictions

Macarthur will be looking to make an immediate impact in their inaugural match, while the Wanderers will be out to rectify a poor finish to last season. Both teams have lots of fresh faces so it will take time to gel. I’m tipping this opening match to end in a draw.

  • Western Sydney Wanderers have drawn 3 of their last 7 matches (A-League).
  • Western Sydney Wanderers have seen BBTS in 7 of their last 8 matches (A-League).
  • Western Sydney Wanderers are undefeated in 5 of their last 6 home matches (A-League).
  • Macarthur FC will be playing their first ever A-League match.

Head to Head

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides. Macarthur enter the league as the competition’s newest team.

They are set to forge the first chapter of a new local derby with the Western Sydney Wanderers – who finished the league in ninth last season.

Western Sydney Wanderers Form

Despite playing six of their last eight matches in Sydney, the Wanderers could only muster the two wins from their final eight matches. A poor finish to the season saw them fail to christen their new stadium with a finals berth.

While the results were poor, this isn’t to say the Wanderers weren’t entertaining. Their second last match of the season saw them go down 5-3 to Western United, in a match where the Wanderers came from three goals behind to equalise before fading away.

This was followed by a 2-1 win at home against Melbourne Victory in a dead rubber to see out the season. Midfielder Pirmin Schwegler opened the scoring in the 34th minute before midfielder Jordan O’Doherty sealed the win in the 62nd.

Western Sydney Wanderers Injuries & Team News

The biggest blow to the Wanderers in the off-season came in the form of striker Mitchell Duke’s departure. The 29-year-old scored 18 goals in 37 matches for the club and left for Saudi outfit Al-Taawoun at the end of last season.

The club did not have to look far to find his replacement. The Wanderers poached forward Bernie Ibini from the Newcastle Jets, as well as defender Ziggy Gordon from the Central Coast Mariners.

This season will also be Carl Robinson’s first as manager of the Wanderers. The Welshman replaces the outgoing Jean-Paul de Marigny, having previously coached at the Jets and in Canada.

Macarthur Form

Macarthur come in as the league’s newest side this season. Much of 2020 has revolved around building a new squad and ensuring that everything is set for the debut campaign.

The Bulls went down 2-1 to Australia’s U23 side before most recently defeating Adelaide United 3-1 in their final pre-season friendly.

Macarthur jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the break with right-back Ivan Franjic and forwards Moudi Najjar and Matt Derbyshire all scoring.

Macarthur Injuries & Team News

Macarthur have had to build an entire squad from scratch in the off-season. Their transfer business was headlined by the signing of Spanish midfielders Markel Susaeta and Benat Etxebarria – both of whom have played for Athletic Bilbao.

The club has also brought in former Reading goalkeeper Adam Federeci, as well as former Socceroos captain Mark Milligan and winger Tommy Oar.

Up front, the club has recruited former Blackburn Rovers and Omonoia Nicosia striker Matt Derbyshire.
