Melbourne City are licking their wounds after a heavy derby defeat to Victory last week, but they can bounce back after a Western United side that is still searching for their first win of the season.

After a disappointing season last term, Western once again look like struggling to finish in the top six in 2024/25.

They do at least remain unbeaten after two rounds, posting a pair of 1-1 draws on the road against Wellington and at home last week to the Wanderers.

John Aloisi's side have looked solid in patches, but this will be another test, with City having a point to prove to bounce back from their derby demolition.

It's been an underwhelming start to the season for City, who have well and truly fallen back to the pack after barely making the finals last term.

City scored in the opening minute of their Round 1 win over the Jets through Marco Tilio, but they couldn't find the back of the net again, holding on for a rather dour 1-0 triumph.

City then conceded three goals in the opening 25 minutes of last week's derby with Victory, and although they fought valiantly to get one goal back, they never looked likely to mount a comeback.

James Jeggo was sent off in the Round 1 win over Newcastle and should be in line for a return to the starting side here.

Western are winless to start the season and they still look like they need considerable improvement to challenge for the finals.
