Jeonbuk Motors vs Sydney FC Preview

With just one defeat at home in their last 13 competitive games in all competitions, Jeonbuk are obviously a tough nut to crack on their own turf. Jeonbuk to win with both teams scoring is the prediction in this quarter-final first leg.

  • Sydney FC Form

  • Jeonbuk have won all 4 ACL home games this season
  • Jeonbuk are unbeaten in all four previous meetings with Sydney (winning two)
  • Sydney have scored in all 4 away ACL games this season
  • Sydney have scored at least one goal in 17 of their last 20 games in all competitions

Head To Head

This will be the fifth meeting between the two clubs, with Jeonbuk going unbeaten in the previous four, prevailing 3-2 in Sydney in the most-recent encounter in the 2022 Asian Champions League.

Jeonbuk Motors Form

Jeonbuk finished top of Group H to advance to the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League 2, but it was anything but straightforward.

Indeed, Jeonbuk lost two games against Muangthong and Selangor, but ultimately a 4-0 win over last-placed Cebu saw them secure first place, one point ahead of Muangthong and two clear of Selangor, who were extremely unlucky to miss out.

Jeonbuk proceeded to east past Port MTI FC of Thailand 5-0 on aggregate in the R16.

The South Korean heavyweights didn't have a great K-League season last term, finishing down in 10th spot. There's only been three games of the 2025 campaign, with Jeonbuk registering a 1-1-1 record.

Managed by former Chelsea and Tottenham star Gus Poyet, Jeonbuk will be confident of extending their unbeaten record against their Australian opponents in the first leg at home.

Sydney FC Form

Sydney have advanced into the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League 2 for the first time and will be hoping to continue their dream run, with the final of the continental competition to be played at Allianz Stadium if they make it.

The Sky Blues finished second in Group E, winning four of their six games and losing twice to Sanfrecce Hiroshima, who topped the group and are also in the quarter-finals.

Advancing into the R16 against Bangkok United, Sydney needed extra-time in the second leg before emerging 5-4 winners in a thrilling tie, with Douglas Costa netting the decisive goal in the 100th minute.

Juggling A-League commitments with the Champions League has been tough at times for Sydney, who are currently languishing outside the finals spots in seventh after 19 fixtures.

Ufuk Talay's side do bring winning momentum into this clash, beating Macarthur 2-0 last weekend, with rising youngster Adrian Segecic scoring his 13th goal of the season in all competitions.

Verdict

Jeonbuk have won all four of their Champions League home games this term and I'm backing them to extend that streak to five here.Sydney have a lot of attacking threat and can score.
