Yokohama F. Marinos vs Ulsan Predictions

Home advantage could prove crucial in Wednesday's AFC Champions League semi-final second leg.

I fancy Yokohama to win on the night, with extra-time a real possibility at the Nissan Stadium.

  • Yokohama F. Marinos won 5 of their last 7 home matches (AFC Champions League)
  • Ulsan lost 3 of their last 6 away matches (AFC Champions League)

Head to Head

Last week's first leg in South Korea was the first-ever meeting between Ulsan and Yokohama F. Marinos.

Yokohama F Marinos Form

Yokohama F Marinos enjoyed a free weekend domestically after last week's semi-final first-leg defeat in Ulsan. Harry Kewell's side slipped to a 1-0 loss, with Lee Dong-Gyeong's 19th-minute strike proving the difference maker.

The Marinos have struggled to find much consistency in the past couple of months. Kewell's men won five, lost three and drew two of their last ten games since the start of March.

Strong on their own patch, Yokohama won five (including extra-time) of their six most recent Champions League fixtures in Japan.

Head coach Kewell has a couple of absentees for Wednesday's return leg in Yokohama. Boniface Nduka is suspended, while Kaito Mori remains a long-term absentee with an ACL injury sustained in March.

Ulsan Hyundai Form

Ulsan come into Wednesday's second leg with fresh legs after a free weekend domestically. The Tigers claimed straightforward home wins against Suwon (3-0) and Gangwon (4-0) before last week's first-leg victory against Yokohama.

Seven games into their domestic season, Hong Myung-Bo's side sit third in the K League 1 with 14 points picked up.

Ulsan suffered their first loss of the season in their last away fixture at Daejeon Hana Citizen earlier this month.

Ulsan Hyundai Team News

With no new selection issues and a fully fit squad to choose from, Hong Myung-Bo could name the same XI that claimed a hard-fought victory last Wednesday.

Brazilian midfielder Matheus Sales could earn a recall should Myung-Bo opt to freshen his pack.

Verdict

Yokohama know that only a win will do, and I expect them to at least force extra time in Wednesday's second-leg contest.

A home win is my top tip for a likely tense occasion in Japan.
