Cameroon vs Malawi Match Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Cameroon will welcome Malawi to the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium for a Group B clash in the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifiers. The hosts have a good record at home and should claim a comfortable win on Friday.

The Indomitable Lions were held to a 1-1 draw away at Comoros in their previous outing in the qualifiers back in September. They needed a late goal from Angers striker Stephane Bahoken to salvage a point.

The fixture in Comoros was the first in charge for new manager Clarence Seedorf as they attempt to bounce back from their failure to make the World Cup in Russia. The Cameroonians are currently top of Group B having begun their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Morocco.

The hosts will be without captain Benjamin Moukandjo, who has announced his retirement from International football. Seedorf has however recalled Christian Bassogog after the China based striker missed the fixture against Comoros in September.

The Flames were disappointing in their last fixture in the qualifiers as they suffered a 3-0 defeat away at Morocco. They were completely outclassed by the North Africans and could only muster a single shot on target.

Ronny Van Geneugden's men have been on a terrible run of form lately as they are without a win in their last 12 matches. They are third in their AFCON qualifying group with three points having claimed a 1-0 win over Comoros in their opening fixture.

Malawi have had problems in attack, scoring just one goal in their last six matches. The duo of Chiukepo Msowoya and Stain Dave are expected to continue their partnership up front but neither man has found the net in six appearances.

This is the first ever meeting between Cameroon and Malawi.

Cameroon have plenty of quality in their attack with Bassogog, Bahoken and Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting. All three men bring a combination of power, pace and physicality and should have too much for John Lanjesi and Precious Sambani in the Malawi defence.

At the other end of the pitch, the likes of Michael Ngandeu-Ngandjui and Yaya Banana will have no problems keeping out Dave and Msowoya, who have been poor for Malawi in recent matches.

Key Statistics

  • Cameroon have won 7 of last 8 home matches (AFCON Qualifiers).
  • Cameroon have kept clean sheets in 5 of their last 6 home matches (AFCON Qualifiers).
  • Malawi have lost 5 of their last 8 away matches (AFCON Qualifiers).
  • Malawi have failed to score in 5 of their last 6 matches (All Competitions).

Cameroon have looked imperious at home in their recent qualifying matches and should claim a comfortable win on Thursday. Their defensive solidity coupled with the poor attack of Malawi means they are likely to keep a clean sheet as well.
