The sides last met in a friendly in 2015 as Egypt won 2-1.

The Pharaohs sit bottom of their group in 2023 AFCON qualification on goal difference. They beat Guinea 1-0 at home before losing 2-0 in Malawi to Ethiopia.

Since then, Egypt have played four friendlies. They lost 4-1 to Korea Republic before beating Niger 3-0. 

In September, they beat Liberia 3-0. Their last match was a fine 2-1 win against Belgium in November in a pre-World Cup friendly.

Egypt coach Rui Vitória is without injured midfielders Mohamed Elneny and Mahmoud Trezeguet. Ipswich Town skipper Sam Morsy has been left out.

Egypt have seven foreign-based players (including Mo Salah) and seven from Al Ahly. Five Pyramids FC players have been included.

Malawi Form


The Flames made a strong start to 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifying. They beat Ethiopia 2-1 at home before losing 1-0 to Guinea.

In July 2022, they were knocked out of the COSAFA Cup in the Group Stages are one win, one loss and one defeat. They then lost on away goals to Mozambique in the CHAN qualifiers. 

They drew 1-1 in a friendly match with Lesotho in February. A week ago, the side drew 1-1 in a friendly with Bangladesh.

Coach Mario Marineca has called up 27 players with 24 of those based in Malawi. AmaZulu striker Gabadinho Mhango is the team’s key player. 

Centre back Limbikani Mzava has been left out as he remains club-less. He has 64 caps for Malawi and will be a loss.
