Ghana and South Africa are set to produce a tight contest in their 2021 AFCON qualifier at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium. Neither team is particularly convincing in attack and Thursday’s clash is tipped to be a low scoring contest.

Ghana Form

Fresh from a disappointing outing at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, Ghana will be aiming to make a positive start to the qualifiers for the next edition. They do not go into Thursday’s opening match in confident mood having been held to a 0-0 draw by Burkina Faso in the 2020 African Nations Championship qualifiers in October.

The Black Stars have suffered just one defeat in their last nine matches, although five of the last seven outings have ended in draws. Kwesi Appiah's men have found goals hard to come by and have found the net just once in their last three matches.

Ghana News

Brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew are both included in the squad and should feature in attack despite combining for just one goal in their last three international matches. Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey is also set to feature in midfield alongside Mubarak Wakaso.

South Africa Form

South Africa earned a 2-1 victory over Mali in an international friendly in October. Efforts from Dean Furman and Themba Zwane gave them a two-goal lead at halftime before the Malians pulled one back after the break.

The result ended a run of three straight matches without a win for Bafana Bafana, stretching back to the 2019 AFCON in Egypt. Molefi Ntseki's men have a good record in AFCON qualifying having gone unbeaten in their last 10 matches with six draws in that run.

South Africa News

South Africa have retained much of the squad that faced Mali in October with Thembinkosi Lorch likely to feature in attack despite scoring just once in his last 10 international appearances. Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebogang Manyama has been called up to in place of the injured Themba Zwane.

Ghana and South Africa have three wins each and as many draws from nine previous matches. The last two meetings have ended in draws with both teams playing out a 0-0 stalemate in a friendly back in June.
