South Sudan vs South Africa Preview

South Africa struggled at home at the weekend, needing a last minute strike to get a point at home against Uganda. They are also not known for their performances on artificial surfaces, so I can see this ending level.

Head to Head

This is the first clash between these sides.

South Sudan Form

South Sudan have tasted victory just once in their last 12 matches. After five successive defeats, they beat neighbours Kenya 1-0.

A 4-0 loss to Senegal and a 0-0 draw vs Mauritania in World Cup qualifiers followed. Two draws followed vs Sao Tome e Principe, 1-1 away and 0-0 at home.

In June’s World Cup qualifiers, they drew 1-1 vs Togo and lost 3-0 at home to Sudan. On Thursday, South Sudan lost 1-0 away to Congo.

South Sudan Squad & Team News

Tito Okello is a key man up front for Frenchman Nicolas Dupuis’s team. He is based in Indonesia.

Peter Chol is the most experienced player and will anchor the midfield. The squad is a mix of locally based players, some based in other African countries and a few abroad.

Goalkeepers: Juma Genaro, Anyama Joseph, Godwill Yugusuk
Defenders: Peter Maker, Rashid Toha, Wani Ivan Adebo, Loki Emmanuel, Atendele Geriga, Samuel Taban
Midfielders: Peter Chol, Jackson Morgan, Joseph Malish, Joseph Dhata, Gaddafi Wahab, Charles Ouma
Forwards: Tito Okello, Valentino Yuel, Machop Chol, Paul America, Lazarus Peter Laku

South Africa Form

Bafana Bafana enjoyed a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. They won just two of those matches with four draws and one loss.

The side played two World Cup qualifiers in June, drawing 1-1 draw in Nigeria and winning 3-1 win at home vs Zimbabwe. The COSAFA Cup followed as they exited in the Group Stages (DDW).

On Friday, South Africa could only draw 2-2 at home to Uganda. A 94th minute equaliser was needed to avoid a home loss.

South Africa Squad & Team News

Captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is injured and Veli Mothwa made a howler vs Uganda. Ricardo Goss could come into the XI in goal.

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha scored on debut in the last match. He is pushing to start this one.

Goalkeepers: Ricardo Goss, Veli Mothwa, Sipho Chaine
Defenders: Khuliso Mudau, Nyiko Mobbie, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Grant Kekana, Siyabonga Ngezana, Rushwin Dortley, Aubrey Modiba, Fawaaz Basadien
Midfielders: Thapelo Morena, Teboho Mokoena, Jayden Adams, Sphephelo Sithole, Thalente Mbatha, Themba Zwane, Patrick Maswanganyi
Forwards: Oswin Appollis, Iqraam Rayners, Elias Mokwana, Lyle Foster, Relebohile Mofokeng

Verdict

I'm backing a draw in this match. I see there being under 2.5 goals in a 1-1 scoreline.
