Shirak and Homenetmen (Pyunik) were joint champions in the first Armenian Premier League title in 1992. Pyunik emerged as the dominant force in 2001, winning 10 straight titles.

The nine teams in the Armenian Premier League play each other four times with the season starting in August and ending in May.

The Armenian Premier League champions take part in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round. The teams finishing second, third and fourth enter the UEFA Europa Conference League first qualifying round alongside the Armenian Cup winners.
