Austrian Bundesliga History
Football has been played in Austria since 1890. From 1900 a cup competition called the Neues Wiener Tagblatt Pokal was played in Vienna.
The first Austrian football championship began in 1911 with the league becoming professional in 1924 and renamed I. Liga or First League.
Austria's annexation by Germany in 1938 brought many changes to Austrian football with many clubs disbanded, banned, or closed and renamed.
In 1965 the Austrian Football Association took over the organisation of the top division and introduced the Nationalliga. In the 1974-75 season the Bundesliga was introduced.
From 1974 to 1982 the Austrian Bundesliga consisted of 10 clubs with each club playing the other four times during the season. From 1982 to 1985 it was contested by 16 clubs with each club playing the other twice.
The Austrian Bundesliga became a 12 team league in 1985 with a home and away regular season in autumn with the top eight clubs advancing to the championship round.
The bottom four of the autumn round played the top four of the First League to determine the four teams to play in the Bundesliga in the following season.
In 1993 the league returned to a 10 team format before switching back to 12 teams from the 2018-19 season.
