The upcoming Europa League clash between Bologna and Roma promises to be a closely contested encounter, with both teams keen on bouncing back from recent Serie A setbacks. Bologna's strong record at home against Roma suggests a tight match is on the horizon. While Roma has been resilient in its recent matches, Bologna has the potential to maintain its unbeaten streak against them. Our expert predictions tilt towards a closely fought draw. Both teams will likely be conservative in their objectives, aiming to avoid a loss in this initial leg of the tie.

Bologna vs Roma Preview

Bologna and Roma are coming off disappointing defeats in Serie A. I don’t think there will be much in this one, the visitors to take a draw in the first leg.

HTH

Roma have a long history against Bologna, leading 58-56 alongside 50 draws.

Bologna Slipping Away in Serie A

Bologna recently won five consecutive games, four of them coming with clean sheets. They earned two 1-0 victories against Brann to advance in the Europa League.

Vincenzo Italiano’s side are coming off a disappointing 2-1 defeat to relegation threatened Verona. Jonathan Rowe opened the scoring in the second half but they couldn’t close it out, ending with 1.30-2.00 xG.

The manager spoke after the match: “A step backwards. We wanted to keep the momentum going and add to our points tally. It’s a shame because we’d done the hardest thing, which was breaking the deadlock in a difficult match, but then we weren’t able to hold on to it.

“The first goal could have been avoided, and for the second we should have committed a foul to stop that counter-attack. We thought it would go differently, but now our thoughts immediately turn to Thursday.”

Roma Fighting for Top Four in Italy

Roma haven’t won back to back games since January, earning two victories in their previous eight matches. Four of those ended in draws, including stalemates against AC Milan and Napoli.

The capital club ended February with a 3-0 win against Cremonese and were on track for another victory against Juventus. Leading 3-1 in the closing stages, they conceded in the 78th and 93rd minutes in a 3-3 draw.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side conceded another late goal in a 2-1 defeat at Genoa on Sunday. Evan Ndicka equalised in the second half but Roma’s leaky defence hurt them once again.

Gasperini evaluated the match: “Genoa played very aggressively and relied a lot on long balls. We were just as determined and just as solid.

“We didn’t have many shots, and neither did they, apart from Malinovskyi’s effort near the end. It’s a shame about the penalty and the goal we conceded. In the closing stages, we weren’t lucky with the decisive incidents.”

Predicted Lineups & Team News

Bologna (4-3-3) Lukasz Skorupski; Nadir Zortea, Martin Vitik, Jhon Lucumi, Juan Miranda; Lewis Ferguson, Remo Freuler, Nikola Moro; Riccardo Orsolini, Santiago Castro, Jonathan Rowe

Remo Freuler competes with Jens Odgaard for a spot in midfield. Federico Bernardeschi will hope to oust Riccardo Orsolini on the right wing.

Roma (3-4-2-1) Mile Svilar; Daniele Ghilardi, Ndicka, Zeki Celik; Devyne Rensch, Manu Kone, Bryan Cristante, Wesley; Bryan Zaragoza, Lorenzo Pellegrini; Donyell Malen

Gasperini has a number of concerns with Mario Hermoso, Matias Soule, Evan Ferguson, Paulo Dybala and Artem Dovbyk all battling injuries.

Gianluca Mancini is suspended, Zeki Celik to continue in central defence.

Verdict

Bologna have lost only once in ten Europa League matches this season, on opening day at Aston Villa. Roma are likely to adopt a cautious approach here and are likely to be content to avoid defeat.
