Palmeiras vs Flamengo Preview & Betting Tips

Palmeiras welcome league leaders Flamengo to the Allianz Parque for a Brazilian Serie A clash on Thursday. The visitors are looking to extend their winning streak to six matches, while Palmeiras are hoping to climb into the top four on the table.

The Big Green were held to a 2-2 draw away at bottom side Ceara last weekend. They threw away a two goal lead as first half strikes from Thiago and Dudu were cancelled out late in the second half by the Fortaleza based team.

The result left Palmeiras sixth on the table, just eight points off the table-toppers, and they could climb into the top four if results go their way this week. They are currently unbeaten in three matches although they did lose the two outings prior to that run.

Manager Roger Machado’s side have taken points off Gremio and Sao Paolo in recent weeks, both of whom are sitting above Palmeiras. They have scored 17 goals in the league this season, and conceded 10.

There are no injuries or suspensions in the Palmeiras squad, and as a result, Machado could stick with much of the same team that started at Ceara. Willian should start in front of the attacking trio of Dudu, Hyoran and Lucas Lima, while Thiago Martins and Edu Dracena should continue in central defence.

Flamengo continued to set the pace in the Serie A following a 2-0 home victory over second-bottom Parana last weekend. Goals in each half from Diego and Felipe Vizeu helped the Rio based club strengthen their hold at the top of the table.

The Rio based club are six points clear at the summit of the league after winning their last five matches. They are also one of the leading scorers in the league this season, with 20 goals to their name so far, second only to Atletico Mineiro.

While renowned for their formidable attack, Flamengo have found a way to balance their play, with some solid defending in recent weeks. They have kept clean sheets in each of their last five matches, and have conceded only six goals all season.

Manager Mauricio Barbieri has a fully fit squad to choose from, although he will continue to be without Paolo Guerrero who is representing Peru at the World Cup. Henrique Dourado, Diego and Jean Lucas are both expected to start, with Thuler and Leo Duarte are also in contention.

Palmeiras won the last meeting between both teams back in 2017, with Deyverson getting both goals for the Fortaleza outfit.  They have a fantastic record against Flamengo, having not tasted defeat in their last six matches.

Flamengo are the form team heading into this clash, but their record against Palmeiras leaves a lot to be desired. They have lost four of the last six matches against Thursday’s hosts, and while they have played some fantastic football this season, they always tend to struggle against Palmeiras.

Key Statistics

  • Palmeiras have won 7 of their last 10 home matches (Serie A).
  • Palmeiras have won 4 of their last 6 matches with Flamengo (Serie A).
  • Flamengo have lost 9 of their last 15 away matches (Serie A).

Flamengo are undoubtedly the form team in the league so far, but they face a side against whom they have a horrible record. Their five-match winning streak looks set to come to an end at the Allianz Parque on Thursday.

Their wins over Gremio and Sao Paolo shows that they are up for the big occasion.
