CAF Confederation Cup Tips & Predictions

The CAF Confederation Cup is the second tier international club football competition in Africa. Run by the Confederation of African Football, the tournament is Africa’s equivalent of the UEFA Europa League.

The tournament was founded in 1992 by CAF president Issa Hayatou. Originally named the CAF Cup, the tournament was merged with the African Cup Winners' Cup in 2004 and renamed the CAF Confederation Cup.

59 teams take part in qualification before the top 16 teams contest the group stage. The eight teams eliminated from the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League automatically qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals.

Unlike the UEFA Champions League, the winner is decided after a two-legged home and away final. The winners qualify for the CAF Super Cup against the winners of the CAF Champions League.

Algerian club JS Kabylie won their third successive title in 2002 with the most successful club since 2004 being Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien with 3 titles. Tunisia’s Étoile du Sahel have won twice alongside DR Congo’s TP Mazembe who are the current champions after defeating South Africa’s SuperSport United in the 2017 final.
