Argentina vs Brazil Predictions

Argentina’s attack deserves respect, but Brazil are their biggest test yet at Copa America. The Neymar vs Lionel Messi battle will go a long way to deciding who comes out on top.

I am backing Neymar to lead Brazil to victory in Rio de Janeiro.

  • Argentina are undefeated in their last 19 matches (all competitions).
  • Argentina have drawn 5 of their last 10 matches (all competitions).
  • Argentina’s Lionel Messi has 4 goals and 5 assists in his last 6 matches.
  • Argentina have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 7 matches against Brazil (all competitions).
  • Brazil have won their last 8 home matches against Argentina (all competitions).
  • Brazil have won 12 of their last 13 matches (all competitions).
  • Brazil have won to nil in 10 of their last 13 matches (all competitions).
  • Brazil have won by 2+ goals in 8 of their last 13 matches (all competitions).
  • Brazil’s Neymar has scored 7 goals in his last 8 internationals (all competitions).

Head to Head

Brazil have a 44-39 advantage against Argentina with 22 draws in 105 matches.

They last met in a friendly in November 2019, Argentina winning 1-0 in Saudi Arabia with Lionel Messi on target.

Argentina Form

Argentina haven’t lost since July 2019, a run of 19 consecutive matches.

La Albiceleste drew 1-1 against Chile in their first match at Copa America. They recorded 1-0 wins against Uruguay and Paraguay before finding their rhythm.

Lionel Scaloni’s side won 4-1 win against Bolivia with Lionel Messi scoring twice. They beat Ecuador 3-0 in the quarter-finals, Messi hitting the post, assisting Rodrigo de Paul and Lautaro Martínez before scoring a late free kick.

Argentina’s last match was a penalty shootout win against Colombia in the semi-finals. Lautaro Martínez opened the scoring but they were pushed all the way.

Lionel Messi, Leandro Paredes and Lautaro Martínez scored their spot kicks with Emiliano Martínez saving three penalties.

Argentina Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Franco Armani, Agustín Marchesín, Juan Musso, Emiliano Martínez
Defenders: Lucas Martínez Quarta, Nicolás Tagliafico, Gonzalo Montiel, Germán Pezzella, Marcos Acuña, Cristian Romero, Nicolás Otamendi, Lisandro Martínez, Nahuel Molina
Midfielders: Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Ángel Di María, Exequiel Palacios, Nicolás Domínguez, Guido Rodríguez, Giovani Lo Celso, Ángel Correa, Papu Gómez
Forwards: Sergio Agüero, Lionel Messi (Captain), Nicolás González, Joaquín Correa, Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez

Gonzalo Montiel competes with Nahuel Molina for a starting spot at right back. Leandro Paredes and Guido Rodríguez are holding midfield options.

Nicolás González looks to have edged ahead of Ángel Di María for a spot next to Lautaro Martinez up front.

Lionel Messi has scored 76 goals in 150 internationals. He has 4 goals and 5 assists in six matches at Copa America 2021.

Brazil Form

Brazil have won 12 of their last 13 matches, keeping 10 clean sheets in that run and winning eight of them by 2+ goals.

The Seleção beat Venezuela 3-0 in their first match at Copa America. They backed up with a 4-0 win against Peru in Rio de Janeiro.

Tite’s side left it late against Colombia in a 2-1 win, Roberto Firmino equalising and Casemiro heading home Neymar’s corner in added time.

Tite made wholesale changes in their final group game against Ecuador. They took the lead through Éder Militão with Vinícius Júnior missing a great chance after Ecuador made it 1-1.

Brazil beat Chile 1-0 in the quarter-finals. Lucas Paquetá opened the scoring in the 46th minute and Gabriel Jesus was sent off 2 minutes later.

Brazil’s last match was a 1-0 win against Peru in the semi-finals. Neymar assisted Paquetá for the winning goal in a match they largely dominated.

Brazil Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Alisson, Ederson, Weverton
Defenders: Thiago Silva (captain), Marquinhos, Danilo, Alex Sandro, Renan Lodi, Éder Militão, Felipe, Emerson
Midfielders: Casemiro, Lucas Paquetá, Fabinho, Fred, Éverton Ribeiro, Douglas Luiz
Forwards: Neymar, Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus, Richarlison, Everton, Gabriel Barbosa, Vinícius Júnior

Lucas Paquetá should continue to start after winning goals against Chile and Peru.

Alex Sandro will hope to start ahead of Renan Lodi at left back.

Gabriel Jesus is available after suspension.

Neymar has scored 68 goals in 110 internationals and needs nine more to equal Pepe at the top of the goalscorers list for Brazil.
