Brazil vs Costa Rica Predictions

A relatively straightforward Brazilian win seems likely in Tuesday's Copa America contest.

While it might not be a walkover, I expect Brazil to win with a clean sheet at SoFi Stadium.

  • Brazil won 7 of their last 9 matches (Copa America)
  • Brazil kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 7 victories (Copa America)
  • Brazil kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 7 wins against Costa Rica
  • Costa Rica lost all 10 previous matches against Brazil
  • Costa Rica lost 7 of their last 11 matches (Copa America)

Head to Head

Brazil and Costa Rica meet for the 11th time on Tuesday. Brazil won all ten previous encounters, including a 2-0 win in their most recent encounter at the World Cup in 2018.

Brazil Form

After a dismal end to the year, Brazil have found some improved form in recent friendly fixtures. Following three successive World Cup qualification defeats against Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina, the Seleção have since remained unbeaten in four friendly fixtures, including a 1-0 win against England at Wembley.

Now under the charge of Dorival Júnior, a new-look Brazil also claimed a 3-2 win against Mexico before a 1-1 draw with USA in their final Copa America warm-up fixtures.

Copa America champions in 2019, the Seleçã osuffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat against rivals Argentina in the final of the 2021 tournament.

Brazil Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Alisson, Bento, Rafael
Defenders: Danilo (captain), Éder Militão, Marquinhos, Wendell, Yan Couto, Gabriel Magalhães, Guilherme Arana, Lucas Beraldo, Bremer
Midfielders: Bruno Guimarães, Lucas Paquetá, João Gomes, Douglas Luiz, Andreas Pereira, Éderson
Forwards: Vinícius Júnior, Endrick, Rodrygo, Raphinha, Sávio, Evanilson, Gabriel Martinelli, Pepê

Head coach Dorival Junior selected a relatively inexperienced 26-man squad for Brazil's Copa America campaign. Fifteen members of the group have fewer than ten caps to their name.

Teenage star Endrick has been included in the selection, however, long-term injury absentee Neymar remains sidelined.

Costa Rica Form

Costa Rica come into Tuesday's Copa America clash in high spirits following back-to-back World Cup qualification victories earlier this month. Gustavo Alfaro's side eased to a 4-0 win against St. Kitts and Nevis in San Jose, before a 3-0 road victory at Grenada two days later.

Los Ticos have won four and lost just one of their last six internationals after finishing 2023 with three successive defeats.

Making their sixth appearance at the Copa America, Costa Rica reached the quarter-finals in 2001 and 2004 before falling at the group stage in 2011 and 2016.

Costa Rica Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Kevin Chamorro, Patrick Sequeira, Aarón Cruz
Defenders: Francisco Calvo, Juan Pablo Vargas, Joseph Mora, Julio Cascante, Haxzel Quirós, Gerald Taylor, Jeyland Mitchell, Fernán Faerrón, Yeison Molina, Douglas Sequeira
Midfielders: Ariel Lassiter, Orlando Galo, Brandon Aguilera, Jefferson Brenes, Josimar Alcócer, Alejandro Bran
Forwards: Joel Campbell, Anthony Contreras, Warren Madrigal, Álvaro Zamora, Manfred Ugalde, Kenneth Vargas, Andy Rojas

Costa Rican boss Alfaro has a 26-man squad available ahead of Tuesday's opener.

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas has retired from international duty, so Kevin Chamorro is expected to earn his 12th cap. Bryan Oviedo is another notable absentee from the Costa Rican selection.

Verdict

Costa Rica are no pushovers, but Brazil should make a winning start to their Copa America campaign.

I'm putting my money on Brazil to win with a clean sheet on Tuesday.
