Chile vs Argentina Predictions

An on-song Argentina should make it two wins from two in Group A at the Copa America.

I'm on the champions to win, and to keep a clean sheet against a Chile side a little short in attacking quality.

  • Chile failed to score in 5 of their last 9 matches
  • Argentina won 14 of their last 15 matches
  • Argentina kept clean sheets in 12  of their last 14 victories

Head to Head

Argentina and Chile will meet for the 28th time on Wednesday. Argentina claimed victory on 14 occasions while Chile picked up five victories. Two of those Chilean wins came via dramatic penalty shootouts in the final of the Copa America in both 2015 and 2016.

Chile Form

Chile's bid for a third Copa America title triumph began with a frustrating goalless draw against Peru over the weekend. Alexis Sanchez had the Chilean's best opportunity, but on a night of few clear-cut chances, La Roja would be forced to settle for a point.

Under the charge of Argentine boss Ricardo Gareca, Chile won two of three pre-tournament friendlies before Saturday's stalemate in Texas.

Chile have struggled in competitive fixtures though, failing to win eight of their last nine matches played since March 2022.

Chile Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Claudio Bravo, Gabriel Arias, Brayan Cortés
Defenders: Gabriel Suazo, Guillermo Maripán, Mauricio Isla, Paulo Díaz, Thomas Galdames, Igor Lichnovsky, Matías Catalán, Benjamín Kuscevic, Nicolás Fernández
Midfielders: Marcelino Núñez, Darío Osorio, Erick Pulgar, Diego Valdés, Esteban Pavez, Rodrigo Echeverría, César Pérez
Forwards: Víctor Dávila, Alexis Sánchez, Eduardo Vargas, Ben Brereton Díaz, Cristián Zavala, Marcos Bolados, Maximiliano Guerrero

Head coach Gareca could be forced into at least one change to his selection on Wednesday. Diego Valdes' participation is in doubt after he was withdrawn at the interval against Peru. Dario Osorio is the expected deputy in the Chilean midfield.

Argentina Form

Argentina began their Copa America title defence with a hard-earned 2-0 win against Canada last week. Goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez secured yet another victory for La Albiceleste.

Lionel Scaloni's side have now won 14 of their last 15 internationals since their World Cup triumph in Qatar 18 months ago. Incredibly, Argentina are unbeaten in 58 of their last 60 matches over the past five years.

Defensively sound, Argentina kept clean sheets in five of their last six Copa America matches and in four of their six most recent fixtures.

Argentina Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Franco Armani, Gerónimo Rulli, Emiliano Martínez
Defenders: Lucas Martínez Quarta, Nicolás Tagliafico, Gonzalo Montiel, Germán Pezzella, Marcos Acuña, Cristian Romero, Nicolás Otamendi, Lisandro Martínez, Nahuel Molina,,
Midfielders: Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Exequiel Palacios, Giovani Lo Celso, Guido Rodríguez, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernández, Valentín Carboni
Forwards: Julián Álvarez, Lionel Messi (captain), Ángel Di María (vice-captain), Nicolás González, Alejandro Garnacho, Lautaro Martínez

Head coach Scaloni has a fully fit squad available on Wednesday and is likely to retain faith in the same XI that eased past Canada.

Lionel Messi will make his 36th appearance at the Copa America - a new record for the competition.

Verdict

Chile rarely makes life easy for Argentina, but a lack of firepower could prove their undoing on Wednesday.

I'm backing the champions to win and to keep a clean sheet.
