Colombia vs Paraguay Predictions

Colombia are in superb form and should be able to kick-start their Copa America campaign with all three points on Monday.

I'm backing the Colombians to win at NRG Stadium, Houston.

  • Colombia won their last 8 matches
  • Colombia won 18 of their last 23 matches (W18, D5)
  • Paraguay lost 8 of their last 11 matches against Colombia
  • Paraguay lost 4 of their last 8 matches

Head to Head

Monday's Copa America contest sees Colombia and Paraguay square off for the 22nd time since 1987. Colombia hold the H2H advantage with 12 wins to Paraguay's four.

La Tricolor have enjoyed relative dominance in recent encounters, remaining unbeaten in ten of their last 11 meetings since 2009 (W8, D2, L1).

Colombia Form

An in-form Colombia make their first appearance at this summer's Copa America on the back of eight successive victories since November. La Tricolor scored back-to-back World Cup qualification wins against Brazil and Paraguay last November before six successive friendly victories this year.

Now unbeaten in 23 matches since March 2022, Néstor Lorenzo's in-form side scored heavy wins against the USA (5-1) and Bolivia (3-0) in their last two friendly fixtures over the past fortnight.

Serious contenders to go all the way this summer, Colombia have won just one Copa America title (in 2001) in 23 previous apperances.

Colombia Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: David Ospina, Camilo Vargas, Álvaro Montero
Defenders: Davinson Sánchez, Santiago Arias, Yerry Mina, Daniel Muñoz, Johan Mojica, Jhon Lucumí, Carlos Cuesta, Deiver Machado, Yerson Mosquera
Midfielders: James Rodríguez (captain), Mateus Uribe, Jefferson Lerma, Juan Fernando Quintero, Jorge Carrascal, Jhon Arias, Kevin Castaño, Richard Ríos, Yáser Asprilla,
Forwards: Luis Díaz, Rafael Santos Borré, Miguel Borja, Luis Sinisterra, Jhon Durán,

Head coach Lorenzo has a strong 26-man squad available for Monday's opener in Houston.

Premier League pair Luis Suarez and Luis Sinisterra are both likely to feature in the Colombian selection.

Paraguay Form

Paraguay begin their Copa America campaign after securing a first win in five matches in their final preparation fixture against Panama last week. The Parguayans failed to score in four previous contests against Chile (twice), Peru and in a 1-0 World Cup qualification defeat against Colombia.

A tough couple of years has seen Daniel Garnero's side fail to win 11 of their last 15 internationals. Short on attacking firepower, Paraguay scored just seven goals in those fixtures.

Los Guaraníes have fared little better in recent Copa America performances. Paraguay lost nine and won only two of their last 14 matches at this competition since a famous victory against Brazil in 2015.

Paraguay Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Carlos Coronel, Alfredo Aguilar, Rodrigo Morínigo
Defenders: Gustavo Gómez (captain), Júnior Alonso, Fabián Balbuena, Omar Alderete, Iván Ramírez, Matías Espinoza, Néstor Giménez, Gustavo Velázquez
Midfielders: Miguel Almirón, Mathías Villasanti, Richard Sánchez, Alejandro Romero Gamarra, Andrés Cubas, Matías Rojas, Hernesto Caballero, Damián Bobadilla, Fabrizio Peralta
Forwards: Derlis González, Ángel Romero, Julio Enciso, Ramón Sosa, Adam Bareiro, Alex Arce

Daniel Garnero selected a 26-man squad for Paraguay's Copa America campaign. Rodrigo Morinigo is the only uncapped player included in the Los Guaraníes selection.

Captain Gustavo Gómez is poised to win his 75th cap on Monday.

Verdict

An in-form Colombia should prove too good for Paraguay on Monday.

I'm backing La Tricolor to claim all three points at the NRG Stadium.
