Will Argentina live up to their favorites tag and cruise through the group? Can Chile's resilience and tactical mastery steal the top spot? Or will Peru or Canada spring a surprise and shake up the group standings?
Let’s break down Group A and look for some value in the betting markets.
Group A Winner Odds
Argentina
World Ranking: 1
Copa America Appearances: 43
Copa America Wins: 15
Buoyed by their 2022 World Cup triumph and led by the indomitable Lionel Messi, Argentina enter Copa América 2024 as the undisputed number one nation in world football.
A star-studded squad featuring the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, and Rodrigo De Paul will take some stopping this summer.
Under Lionel Scaloni, the Argentines are unbeaten in 53 of their last 55 matches since 2019. Since their World Cup triumph in 2022, La Albiceleste have won ten of 11 games played, including a 1-0 win against Brazil in World Cup qualification.
With confidence, quality and a winning formula, the Argentines are undoubted favourites to claim back-to-back Copa America triumphs.
Chile
World Ranking: 42
Copa America Appearances: 40
Copa America Wins: 2
While Chile appears the second-strongest team in Group A on paper, their recent form raises plenty of questions. Led by veteran Alexis Sanchez, they have failed to win seven of their last nine matches over the past year.
The Chileans do have a strong recent history in this tournament though, having secured back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016, triumphing over Argentina in dramatic penalty shootouts on both occasions.
The 35-year-old Sanchez, a key figure in those victories, is expected to feature prominently in the squad, potentially partnering with Ben Brereton Diaz in attack. Veteran goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, 41, remains a key part of an aging selection.
Despite their recent struggles, Chile's pedigree and big-game experience cannot be dismissed, even if recent form suggests an early exit could be on the cards.
Peru
World Ranking: 32
Copa America Appearances: 33
Copa America Wins: 2
Peru, though often overshadowed by the star power of Argentina and Chile, could emerge as the dark horse of Group A. While they have struggled in recent matches, failing to secure a win in seven of their last nine outings, their experience and past successes cannot be ignored.
La Blanquirroja´s impressive run to the 2019 Copa América final showcased their ability to defy expectations and compete at the highest level.
The Orlando City duo of Pedro Gallese and Wilder Cartagena are expected to play pivotal roles, alongside midfield stalwart Renato Tapia.
Despite their lack of household names, the Peruvians are a tough side to beat, and could yet emerge as runners-up in a likely keenly contested section.
Canada
World Ranking: 49
Copa America Appearances: Debut
Copa America Wins: NA
Led by Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, Canada makes its historic Copa América debut, riding the wave of their impressive 2022 World Cup qualification.
While Group A presents a formidable challenge, with reigning champions Argentina as the clear favorites, Canada's dynamic squad boasts a mix of youth and experience, including rising stars like Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan.
Despite their status as section underdogs, Canada's resilience and fearless approach could prove a captivating element in a group filled with potential upsets. The Canucks are eager to make their mark on the continental stage, and they could yet spring a surprise in Group A.
H2H
Group A of the 2024 Copa América offers a fascinating mix of familiar rivalries and fresh encounters. While Argentina boasts a dominant historical record against Chile and Peru, recent results suggest a more competitive landscape.
The Argentines will have few fond memories of neighbours Chile, after penalty shoot out defeats in the final of both the 2015 and 2016 Copa America tournaments. Scaloni´s side have won three of their six most recent matches against the Chileans since those defeats.
Peru have not beaten Argentina in any of their last 15 attempts, but have scored victories in three of their last five against Chile.
As for Canada, the group's newcomer, their head-to-head record against the South American trio is non-existent, making them very much the wildcards at this tournament.
Group A Fixtures
Group A kicks off with an intriguing clash between reigning champions Argentina and debutants Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on June 21st. The following day, Peru and Chile face off at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
The second round of matches sees Chile take on Argentina at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, while Peru faces Canada at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
The group concludes with a doubleheader on June 30th, with Argentina battling Peru at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and Canada squaring off against Chile at Exploria Stadium in Orlando.

Group A Tips
Argentina should sail through the group, although 1.25 odds to top the section are a little skinny.
Beyond that, a closely-fought three-way battle to claim second spot seems likely. While Chile and Peru are favourites to progress, I fancy Canada to upset the applecart in Group A.
- Canada to Qualify 3.5
- Chile not to qualify - 1.8
