Flamengo vs Penarol Predictions

Flamengo have a supreme home record in this competition, and I expect them to build a first-leg advantage on Thursday.

I'm backing the hosts to win and to keep a clean sheet at the Maracana.

  • Flamengo won their last 18 home matches (Copa Libertadores)
  • Flamengo kept a clean sheet in 8 of their last 9 home victories (Copa Libertadores)
  • Penarol lost 17 of their last 19 away matches (Copa Libertadores)
  • Penarol failed to score in 4 of their last 6 away matches (Copa Libertadores)

Head to Head

Flamengo and Penarol will meet for the fifth time on Thursday. Penarol claimed 1-0 wins in three of their four previous encounters, before a goalless draw in their most recent meeting in 2019.

Flamengo Form

Flamengo turn their attention to Copa Libertadores duties after a frustrating 1-1 Serie A draw against Vasco da Gama on Sunday. Philippe Coutinho's late goal denied Tite's side a fourth consecutive home victory.

Copa Libertadores (COL) winners in both 2019 and 2023, Flamengo boast a remarkable 30-game unbeaten home record in this competition. The Rubro-Negro won each of their last 18 home COL matches, while they conceded just once in their nine most recent victories at the Maracana.

Across all competitions, Flamengo are unbeaten in 27 of their last 29 home fixtures (W23, D4, L2).

Flamengo Team News

Head coach Tite remains unable to call on a handful of first-team players this week. Nicolas de la Cruz and Michael are set to join long-term injured duo Matias Vina and Pedro on the Flamengo sidelines.

Penarol Form

Penarol make the trip to Brazil in buoyant mood after a commanding 4-0 domestic victory against Rampla Juniors on Sunday. A strong run of form has seen Diego Aguirre's side win six and lose just one of their last nine games across all competitions.

The Uruguayan champions secured their place in the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals with a comfortable 4-1 aggregate victory against Bolivar in the round of sixteen.

Away from their home base in Montevideo, Penarol tend to struggle, though, particularly in continental competition. Los Manyas lost 28 and won just three of their last 35 away matches in the COL since 2011.

Penarol Team News

Head coach Aguirre has no reported injury issues ahead of Thursday's COL tie in Rio.

Experienced playmaker Gastón Ramírez could return to the first XI after making a 45-minute appearance as a second-half substitute in the easy win against Rampla Juniors.

Verdict

Flamengo will surely prove too good for the Uruguayans on Thursday.

A home win with a clean sheet could prove an excellent bet in Rio.
