Danish Superliga History
The
Danish Superliga was founded in 1991, replacing the Danish 1st Division as the highest football league in Denmark. 10 teams participated with the league changing format in the 1991-92 season.
The 10 teams played each other twice in the first half of the tournament with the bottom two teams eliminated. The points were cut in half with the remaining eight teams playing each other twice for a total of 32 games in a season.
The number of teams competing was increased to 12 in the 1995-96 season with each team playing each other three times for a 33 game season.
From 1996 to 2016 the Danish Superliga continued with 12 clubs playing each other three times. The league was expanded to 14 teams in the 2015-16 season.
The 2016-17 season featured a new league structure with all 14 teams playing each other in a full home-and-away schedule. The league was then split into a six-team championship playoff and an eight-team qualifying playoff.
