Carlisle United and Fleetwood Town meet in their opening game of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday. League One Fleetwood are favourites to bounce back from play-off disappointment when they visit League Two Carlisle at Brunton Park.

Carlisle United Form

Carlisle last played a competitive match on March 10th. They beat Newport 2-0 before teams chose to end the League Two season following the coronavirus pandemic.

Chris Beech's side sat in 18th spot when the season was halted but had enjoyed a positive run of form. They suffered just two defeats in the last 11 games played.

In preparation for the start of the new season, Carlisle's friendlies have seen them draw 1-1 with Gateshead and lose 4-1 to Liverpool's under-23 side. Josh Kayode got the goal in both games.

Carlisle United Team News

Carlisle have had a busy summer of changes with 11 departures and 13 new faces brought in. Among the arrivals are Josh Koyode and Marcus Dewhurst, on loan from Rotherham and Sheffield United respectively.

The free transfer signings include Manchester United youngster George Tanner, Bradford pair Joe Riley and Danny Devine, Preston's Jack Armer, Gime Toure from Hartlepool and veteran South African international Dean Furman, who arrives back in England from SuperSport United.

Fleetwood Town Form

Fleetwood Town suffered play-off heartbreak when exiting the League One play-offs at the semi-final stage after losing to Wycombe 6-3 on aggregate.

Joey Barton's side will start the new season among the contenders for promotion, having shown their ability to compete with one defeat in their last 14 games.

It was a costly one though, as a 4-1 home loss to Wycombe in the play-off semi-final first leg ultimately saw them miss out on potential promotion to the Championship.

Fleetwood Town Team News

Fleetwood have allowed eight players to leave Highbury since the end of the season, with four new faces brought in.

Barton has signed Rochdale's Callum Camps, Rangers' Jordan Rossiter and Huddersfield's Joel Coleman on free transfers and signed Liverpool youngster Morgan Boyes on loan for the season.

Carlisle United vs Fleetwood Town Head to Head

Carlisle and Fleetwood Town have met four times in the last decade in cup competitions, three times in this competition. Fleetwood have won two of those three EFL Trophy fixtures, including the most recent courtesy of a 2-1 win in 2017.

Carlisle United vs Fleetwood Town Odds

Fleetwood are odds-on favourites at 1.90. Carlisle are outsiders at 3.80 with the draw priced at 3.60.

  • Carlisle have lost 2 of their last 11 matches (League Two).
