Blackpool vs Middlesbrough Predictions

Blackpool are on a poor winless run and Middlesbrough have drawn regularly in recent EFL Cup matches. With plenty of goals in head to heads between the sides, I am backing a 1-1 draw and BTTS.

Head-to-Head

Middlesbrough have a 29-21 advantage against Blackpool in 67 meetings with 17 draws.

Blackpool Form

Blackpool drew 1-1 away at Bristol City on Saturday to gain a point in their Championship opener following an inconsistent pre-season.

The Tangerines were second best for most of the match and conceded just before halftime. Blackpool improved following the introductions of Josh Bowler and Shayne Lavery late on. Callum Connolly hit the post in the closing stages before Bowler set up Laverly in the 93rd minute for the equaliser.

Neil Critchley's side have won once in their last seven matches, a 1-0 victory against Carlise in a pre-season friendly. The result followed disappointing 3-1 losses to Newport County and Accrington Stanley.

Blackpool had one of the best home records in League One last season, which led to promotion to the Championship via the playoffs. The Tangerines lost just one of their last 23 at Bloomfield Road in the 2020/21 season.

Blackpool Injuries & Team News

Defenders Daniel Gretarsson and Demetri Mitchel are ruled out with long-term injuries.

Midfielders Matty Virtue and Gary Madine are also unavailable due to injury.

Midfield duo Kenny Dougall and Kevin Stewart returned to training this week and could feature against Middlesbrough.

Winger Josh Bowler and striker Shayne Lavery could start after impressive displays from the bench against Bristol.

Middlesbrough Form

Middlesbrough came from a goal down to draw 1-1 away at Fulham in the Championship on Sunday.

Neil Warnock’s side struggled throughout with just 33% possession and seven shots to Fulham’s 16. Boro conceded in the first half and defended solidly to keep the score at 1-0 before Marc Bola scored the equaliser with 10 minutes remaining.

The result extended Boro’s good run of form. The northeast side have lost just once in their last six matches following friendly wins against Rotherham (1-0), Plymouth Argyle (2-1), Tavistock (7-0) and Bishop Aukland (3-0).

The good run of form will be a relief for Warnock, whose side were winless in seven of their last nine matches towards the end of last season. Boro were play-off contenders until poor late season form saw them slip to 10th in the Championship.

Middlesbrough Injuries & Team News

Neil Warnock is expected to rotate his starting XI on Wednesday. He confirmed that new signing Martin Payero (midfielder) will start against Blackpool.

Winger Marcus Tavernier and full-back Diop Spence are also expected to start after recovering from recent injuries. The duo were subbed on after 55 minutes against Fulham.

Verdict

Blackpool will take confidence from their late draw against Bristol, despite missing key players. Boro’s expected squad rotation could affect their consistent early season form.

I am tipping a 1-1 draw between the sides in the EFL Cup first round.
