Portsmouth and Oxford United get the EFL League One play-offs underway on Friday when they meet at Fratton Park. Who will take the early advantage in the search promotion to the Championship?

Portsmouth Form

Portsmouth benefitted from the curtailment of the League One season with Kenny Jackett's side having faltered before the season was postponed. Defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup was followed by a loss to Peterborough and a draw with fellow play-off hopefuls Fleetwood Town.

Despite five of his players testing positive for coronavirus, Jackett will hope the break in the season will have given Portsmouth a chance to overcome the minor blip and return to the form that had seen them win 13 of the 15 games in all competitions prior to losing to Arsenal.

Portsmouth Team News

Christian Burgess, Brett Pitman, Matt Casey, Adam May, Lee Brown, Oli Hawkins and Brandon Haunstrup have all agreed short-term contract extensions and will be available for the play-offs, while Steve Seddon, Sean Raggett, Cameron McGeehan and Ross McCrorie have extended their loan deals.

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild will be available after recovering from a knock, but Luke McGee and Bradley Lethbridge will not be in Jackett's squad after deciding to leave.

Oxford United Form

Oxford flew into the play-off picture on the back of five straight victories in League One to sit in fourth spot - level on points with Portsmouth with identical win-draw-loss records for the 35 games played.

Karl Robinson's side had developed a real threat in front of goal during that five-game winning run that ultimately carried them into the play-offs at the expense of the likes of Peterborough, Sunderland, Doncaster and Ipswich.

Oxford United Team News

Sam Long has signed a new contract and will be in the Oxford squad, but a decision on Rob Hall's availability will be made by the Football League after he spent the second half of the season on loan at Forest Green.

Portsmouth vs Oxford United Head to Head

The two sides drew 1-1 when they met at Fratton Park in November with the scheduled fixture at Kassam Stadium one of the cancelled matches. Things also ended level when Oxford hosted Portsmouth at Kassam Stadium in the EFL Trophy in October, a tie that finished 2-2 before Pompey won 3-2 in extra-time.

Portsmouth vs Oxford United Odds

Portsmouth are 2.05 with bet365 to win the opening leg of the play-off with Oxford 3.30 to take an advantage back to the Kassam Stadium. A draw is 3.40 to happen in the first leg.

Portsmouth vs Oxford United Match Up

There was nothing to split Portsmouth and Oxford in the two 90 minutes results this season, or on points gained from the 35 League One matches played. That suggests we're in for a close contest across the two legs. Friday's first game will boil down to which team comes out of the lockdown period the fitter and better prepared.
