Portsmouth vs Sunderland Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Goals are expected at both ends when Portsmouth host Sunderland in their English League One playoff semi final second leg at Fratton Park. The visitors hold a slim advantage from the first leg and with both teams struggling in defence, BTTS is tipped at odds of 2.00.

Sunderland are also unbeaten in their last three matches against Portsmouth and are good enough to earn a draw at odds of 3.25.

Portsmouth FC Form & Team News

Portsmouth are coming off a 1-0 defeat in the first leg at the Stadium of Light. They fell behind after the break and despite playing most of the second half with a numerical advantage, failed to find an equaliser.

Pompey do not head into the second leg in good form having failed to secure a win in their last four matches. Kenny Jackett's men are still backed at odds of 2.20 to secure a victory on Thursday but given their poor defensive record, BTTS looks the more likely outcome at 2.00.

Portsmouth have been poor in defence and have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight matches. Despite their struggles at the back, Matt Clarke and Christian Burgess are still expected to continue their partnership in central defence. Jamal Lowe is also set to start in attack having scored five goals in his last 10 matches.

Sunderland AFC Form & Team News

Sunderland needed a 64th minute effort from Chris Maguire to secure the victory in the first leg on Sunday. Despite playing much of the second half with 10 men, they managed to keep Portsmouth at bay and held on for the win.

The Black Cats have looked off colour lately having just ended a run of four matches without a win. Jack Ross' men have also struggled defensively, failing to keep a clean sheet in four of their last five matches. They are priced at odds of 3.30 to beat Portsmouth but given their problems in defence, a win appears unlikely.

Sunderland will be without central defender Alim Ozturk, who was shown a red card in the first leg. Top scorer Aiden McGeady is also doubtful after picking up an injury before kick off on Sunday.

Portsmouth's defensive problems mean they are likely to find things difficult against Sunderland's forward players. At the other end of the pitch, they will he banking on Lowe, who has impressed in recent matches.

Sunderland have been unconvincing at the back lately and will be further hampered by the absence of Ozturk.
