Tranmere Rovers vs Gillingham Preview, Predicitons & Betting Tips

Gillingham make the long journey up north to Tranmere Rovers in English League One this weekend. Both teams have struggled to find form this campaign and I'm backing BTTS and a draw.

Tranmere Rovers Form & Team News

Tranmere Rovers have had a tough start to life back in League One. The Merseyside club have won just one of their opening five matches.

Their last home match saw them defeat Bolton Wanderers 5-0 at home. This is a slightly misleading scoreline though as Bolton had to field eleven youth players for the match. Stefan Payne, Oliver Banks and Connor Jennings all grabbed a goal each and Morgan Ferrier grabbed himself a brace.

This victory was Tranmere’s only win in their last seven outings at Prenton Park. They have struggled at the ground since sealing promotion and have only kept one clean sheet in their last seven home games.

Manager Micky Mellon will be without Corey Blackett Taylor and Oliver Banks after both men were sent off during their 2-0 away defeat to Bristol Rovers. Mellon may want to hand a start to Stefan Payne after the striker grabbed a goal in the EFL Trophy in their 1-1 draw with Rotherham.

Payne has now bagged two in three for Rovers and could start alongside Ferrier. New signing Cameron Borthwick Jackson may be put straight into the 11 to help boost their defence.

Tranmere are priced at 2.40 with bet365 to pick up the victory against Gillingham this weekend. Given their poor form, a draw seems more likely and is priced at 3.50.

Gillingham Form & Team News

Gillingham are also struggling in League One this campaign. The Gills have only secured one victory in League One so far this season and manager Steve Evans is under increasing pressure from their fans.

Like Tranmere, Gillingham’s last home match saw them defeat a weak Bolton side 5-0. Brandon Hanlan and Connor Ogilvie grabbed a goal each with Olly Lee scoring a brace and Bolton putting one in their own net. They have also struggled to prevent goals from being conceded, and have only kept one clean sheet in their last nine outings.

Gills manager Steve Evans may want to make a few changes to his side on Saturday. The former Rotherham manager has played around with his team a lot so far this campaign. Mikael Mandron could be in contention for a starting place in the team. Ollie Lee is likely to hold his place in midfield after a strong performance against Bolton.

Gillingham are priced at 2.75 to pick up the win but given that they have not secured an away win this season, I don’t see this being the outcome.

Tranmere Rovers vs Gillingham Head to Head

Tranmere and Gillingham have faced each other 12 teams. Both teams have registered five victories with two of the games ending in a draw. Their last match was in 2014 and it ended in a 2-0 win to Gillingham.

Tranmere Rovers vs Gillingham Match Up

Tranmere Rovers and Gillingham are both struggling to find form at the moment. Both teams have only registered victories against a weak Bolton side, and both of them have very shaky defences.

They both have solid strikers at this level in Mikael Mandron and Stefan Payne and both could make an impact on Saturday afternoon. All signs point to a draw at the moment.

Tranmere Rovers vs Gillingham Key Statistics

  • Tranmere Rovers have kept 1 clean sheet in 7 home matches in all competitions.
  • Gillingham have not won away from home this season (League One).
  • Gillingham have kept 1 clean sheet in their last 8 away matches (League One).
  • Gillingham have kept 1 clean sheet in 9 matches in all competitions.

Verdict

Tranmere and Gillingham are both struggling to find form at the moment and a draws looks like the most likely outcome this weekend.
