Walsall Form

Walsall ended the League Two campaign in fourth position, narrowly missing out on automatic promotion by one point.

The Midlands side went unbeaten in three of their final four games of the campaign and conceded just three goals. Walsall drew 2-2 with Harrogate, 0-0 at Newport, lost 10 against Accrington and beat Crewe 1-0.

The Saddlers then defeated Chesterfield 2-0 in the play-off semi-final first leg. Taylor Allen and Alfie Chang struck before half time as Walsall attempted just seven shots.

Walsall Injuries & Team News

Defender Connor Barrett is suspended.

Midfielder Jack Earing and centre-back Priestley Farquharson are injured and won’t make the squad.

Chesterfield Form

Chesterfield edged into the League Two play-off places after decent late-season form. They were unbeaten in 11 of their last 12 fixtures and secured a seventh-place finish.

The Spireites went unbeaten in their last six games, drawing and winning three. Chesterfield saw low-scoring results in their final two away matches, drawing 0-0 at AFC Wimbledon and beating Accrington 1-0.

Paul Cook’s outfit couldn’t carry their good form into the play-offs and lost 2-0 at home against Walsall. The Spireites had 74% possession and seven shots but couldn’t reply to Walsall’s early goals.

Chesterfield Injuries & Team News

Defenders Chey Dunkley, Janoi Donacien, Ryheem Sheckleford and Vontae Daley-Campbell are injured.

Midfield duo Bailey Hobson and Mike Jones are also sidelined due to injury.

Veteran striker Will Grigg has scored three goals in his last four games and is likely to lead the line.

Verdict

Walsall have kept things tight in recent matches and the goals have dried up for Chesterfield on the road. The Saddlers will want to restrict the Spireites at home and under 2.5 goals is the best bet in League Two.
