Cardiff City vs Newcastle United Preview & Betting Tips
Cardiff City and Newcastle United will do battle at the Cardiff City stadium in a matchday two fixture in the English Premier League. The visitors showed some promise in their opening match against Tottenham Hotspur and should do enough to claim their first win of the season on Saturday.
The Bluebirds were beaten by Bournemouth in their first match back in the English topflight. They were completely outclassed by the Cherries and fell to a 2-0 defeat at the Vitality Stadium.
Cardiff are among the early favourites to make a quick return to the second tier and their performance against Bournemouth suggests they may be in for a torrid campaign. They are already in the news for the wrong reasons as the FA has confirmed that it is investigating a coin throwing incident in their opening match.
Manager Neil Warnock will be keen to focus on matters on the pitch and could name a similar team to the one that started at the Vitality. Bobby Reid will be expected to lead the line while Souleyman Bamba, Junior Hoillet and Sean Morrison should all feature.
The Magpies kicked off their own campaign with a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Joselu's first half equalizer was not enough as they were let down by some poor defending.
Despite the defeat, Newcastle showed plenty of fight in the match and will draw lots of positives from their overall performance. They have a decent record against Cardiff and will be confident of claiming the three points on Saturday.
Newcastle will be without defender DeAndre Yedlin, who is side-lined after injuring his knee in the opening fixture. Javier Manquillo is expected to replace the 25-year-old at right-back while Mohammed Diame, Jonjo Shelvey and Kenedy are all in contention to start while summer signing Salomon Rondon could get the nod ahead of Joselu.
Cardiff and Newcastle have faced each other 36 times in the past with the Magpies edging the head-to-head at 15 wins to 14. The Tyneside club have won four of the last 6 meetings between both teams and did the double over the Bluebirds in the Championship two years ago.
Rafa Benitez's men also claimed a 2-0 win the last time they visited the Cardiff City Stadium with Christian Atsu and Isaac Hayden getting the goals.
Cardiff are expected to be a bit more ambitious at home with Hoillet, Reid and Callum Patterson carrying the team's attacking threat. However, they may not create much and could struggle against Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles in the Newcastle defence.
The home team's positive approach could play into the hands of Newcastle with Kenedy and Matt Ritchie expected to get the better of Lee Peltier and Joe Bennett in the wide areas. The likely introduction of summer signing Salomon Rondon could also give the hosts more to worry about.
- Both teams have scored in 6 of their last 9 meetings (All Competitions).
- 6 of the last 7 matches between both teams have seen Over 2.5 goals (All Competitions).
- Cardiff City have lost 4 of their last 6 home matches (Premier League).
- Cardiff City have conceded in their last 6 home matches (Premier League).
- Newcastle United have won 4 of their last 6 matches against Cardiff City (All Competitions).
Newcastle United have a super record against Cardiff and should take advantage of the Bluebirds slow start to the season. This fixture has produced goals in the past and this should be no different.
