Liverpool vs West Ham Preview & Tips

Liverpool and West Ham will square off at Anfield in their first fixture of the 2018-19 English Premier League season. Both teams have been busy in the transfer market and should serve up a thrilling contest on Sunday.

The Reds are coming off an impressive pre-season campaign which saw them claim four wins and suffer only one defeat in five warm-up matches. They have been installed as one of the favourites to challenge champions Manchester City for the title this season and should begin on a positive note.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has earned praise for masterminding a number of shrewd acquisitions in the transfer market for Liverpool.  Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri have all arrived this summer while the German also forked out £66m for Brazil goalkeeper Allison Becker.

A few of the new signings could be set for their competitive debuts on Sunday with Allison likely to be in goal for the Reds. The front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are expected to start while Virgil Van Dijk could partner Dejan Lovren in defence.

West Ham

The Hammers were disappointing last season as they battled relegation for much of the campaign before securing a 13th place finish. They parted ways with manager David Moyes in the summer and hired former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini.

The Chilean is a former Premier League winner and will hope to transform the fortunes of the London club. He has already strengthened his squad in the transfer window with seven new arrivals this summer.

Among the new signings, Felipe Anderson, Issa Diop and Jack Wilshere could all be in line to make their debuts on Sunday. Marko Arnautovic is likely to start up front while Mark Noble, Pablo Zabaleta, and Angelo Ogbonna could also feature.

Liverpool have won three and lost just one of their last six meetings with West Ham. The Reds did the double over the Hammers last season as they claimed 4-1 victories in both fixtures.

Liverpool rely heavily on their much talked about front three for goals. Last season’s top scorer Salah, Firmino and Mane are quick to close down opposition defenders and constantly change positions which makes them hard to face.

With the likes of Anderson, Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, the Hammers also have attacking options that could cause Liverpool problems. The Reds defence always looks likely to concede.

Key Statistics

  • Liverpool have won 8 of their last 10 home matches (Premier League).
  • Liverpool have seen over 3.5 goals in 6 of their last 10 home matches (Premier League).
  • Liverpool and West Ham have seen over 3.5 goals in 4 of their last 6 meetings (All Competitions).
  • West Ham have seen over 3.5 goals in 7 of their last 10 away matches (Premier League).
  • West Ham have lost 4 of their last 6 away matches (Premier League).

Clashes between Liverpool and West Ham are usually thrilling contests with plenty of goals. Both teams have managers who favour an attacking style of play and Sunday’s clash looks poised to be a high-scoring affair.

I’m backing the Red’s superior attack to outscore West Ham and Mohamed Salah to score the first goal.
